Discover techniques to loosen up and get comfortable with the sometimes elusive world of watercolor. Inspired by Summer, we’ll explore the abundance of our gardens for subject matter, painting a new subject every week. Through demos, discussions, and painting sessions in class, we’ll cover essential watercolor techniques, including working wet-into-wet to create blended transitions and soft edges, color mixing, and basic composition skills - what to emphasize, and what to leave out. Rendering arrangements of objects invites us to concentrate on key fundamentals of painting: color, value, composition. Through demos, critiques, and painting sessions in class, we'll cover color mixing, and how to see and use value changes to strengthen your paintings. Doing some prep work will help with composition, so we'll do that too: small studies (thumbnails), and how to use Notan studies (reducing the image to black and white flat values). Prep work not only gives you more confidence as you paint, it also gives you freedom to explore other possibilities for your designs that might not have emerged otherwise. We'll transfer our contour drawings to hot press watercolor paper, then learn or review the basics of botanical watercolor rendering: flat and gradated washes, wet-on-wet buildup of the color base, addition of form and texture, and finally, dry-brush techniques to sharpen the details. Brief discussions of the tradition of botanical illustration will complement our painting experiences. Have fun working in oils using the all prima method (at first attempt or wet-on-wet) with relative measurements. You'll be introduced to four major elements of successful painting and finish an oil painting in three to four sittings. You'll learn to limit the color palette at the opening and expand the palette for finishing; how to use mediums, when, and why, and how to increase the speed of your decisions on the canvas.   • If this is your first time registering online, please read the detailed instructions linked to the home page. 

  • Liability Waiver Requirement: Before you can attend a class or workshop at the Art Center, we must have a signed RELEASE OF LIABILITY AND ASSUMPTION OF RISK. If you register online you must review and indicate you accept the terms of this release before you will be directed to the classes. If you register by phone, the Registrar will email you a link to the waiver you must complete before your registration can be processed. If you register in person, you will be asked to complete the waiver on our tablet or on your phone. 

  • MY ART HOME  Create and test drive your login well in advance of the opening of registration for faster checkout and access to your account info such as class registrations, donations, membership status, etc. Use the link in the pink box above to create or access your MY ART HOME account. You may register online without an account, but you will not receive your membership discount. Your discount is always available when registering by phone or in person. 
  • Select the class, enter the number of attendees and click "Add classes" at the bottom of the page. Complete the information requested and click "CONTINUE" to add that class to your cart. You can select additional classes from the shopping cart by clicking on the links at the top of the page, or check out if you are done. The building is closed for Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve through New Year's Day*, Memorial Day and the last week in August through Labor Day.* There is no open studio when the building is closed. 

 

* Phone lines will be open Monday-Friday, excluding holidays, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. to take class registrations.
