Working from live seasonal specimens, we'll learn through careful observation and detailed drawing what makes each subject special. We'll transfer our contour drawings to hot press watercolor paper, then learn or review the basics of botanical watercolor rendering: flat and gradated washes, wet-on-wet buildup of the color base, addition of form and texture, and finally, dry-brush techniques to sharpen the details. Brief discussions of the tradition of botanical illustration will complement our painting experiences. Bring your drawing and watercolor materials but make sure to include hot press (smooth) watercolor paper and some fine pointed brushes - see materials list for brush suggestions.

Have fun working in oils using the all prima method (at first attempt or wet-on-wet) with relative measurements. You'll be introduced to four major elements of successful painting and finish an oil painting in three to four sittings. You'll learn to limit the color palette at the opening and expand the palette for finishing; how to use mediums, when, and why, and how to increase the speed of your decisions on the canvas.   • Liability Waiver Requirement: Before you can attend a class or workshop at the Art Center, we must have a signed RELEASE OF LIABILITY AND ASSUMPTION OF RISK. If you register online you must review and indicate you accept the terms of this release before you will be directed to the classes. If you register by phone, the Registrar will email you a link to the waiver you must complete before your registration can be processed. If you register in person, you will be asked to complete the waiver on our tablet or on your phone. 

  • MY ART HOME  Create and test drive your login well in advance of the opening of registration for faster checkout and access to your account info such as class registrations, donations, membership status, etc. Use the link in the pink box above to create or access your MY ART HOME account. You may register online without an account, but you will not receive your membership discount. Your discount is always available when registering by phone or in person. 
  • Select the class, enter the number of attendees and click "Add classes" at the bottom of the page. Complete the information requested and click "CONTINUE" to add that class to your cart. You can select additional classes from the shopping cart by clicking on the links at the top of the page, or check out if you are done. NOTE: Please be sure to complete all the fields with a red asterisk to proceed to the payment page. 

  • Contact a Registrar with any questions at 952-473-7361 ext. 160 or registration@minnetonkaARTS.org. Please note that the New Student Discount can only be processed by registering in-person or by phone. This discount cannot be applied retroactively and it does not apply to birthday parties, subsidized classes, or Summer Arts Camp (SAC). The building is closed for Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve through New Year's Day*, Memorial Day and the last week in August through Labor Day.* There is no open studio when the building is closed. 

 

* Phone lines will be open Monday-Friday, excluding holidays, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. to take class registrations.
