Open to students who have taken "Watercolor I & II: Working from Photos," this class offers individualized guidance for students who are ready to set personal goals for their work and comfortable working independently to complete a body of paintings for periodic instructor critique. Group progress-sharing during independent work sessions will keep students on track with their goals and enhance their understanding of the watercolor process from a variety of viewpoints.
9/4: Goals/expectations set with the instructor during this first class meeting will establish a course of independent study for each student;
9/11 - 9/25: students work independently as a group for reinforcement/support and student-led evaluations;
10/2: Instructor in-person mentoring;
10/9 - 10/23: students work independently as a group for reinforcement/support and student-led evaluations;
10/30: Instructor in-person mentoring;
11/6 - 11/20: students work independently as a group for reinforcement/support and student-led evaluations;
11/27: Instructor in-person mentoring;
12/4 - 12/11: students work independently as a group for reinforcement/support and student-led evaluations;
12/18: final review and celebration of achievements with instructor.
Class will meet with instructor on 9/4, 10/2, 10/30, 11/27, and 12/18 and independently the remaining weeks.

Rendering arrangements of objects invites us to concentrate on key fundamentals of painting: color, value, composition. Through demos, critiques, and painting sessions in class, we'll cover color mixing and how to see and use value changes to strengthen your paintings. Doing some prep work will help with composition, so we'll do that too: small studies (thumbnails), and how to use notan studies (reducing the image to black and white flat values). Prep work not only gives you more confidence as you paint, it also gives you freedom to explore other possibilities for your designs that might not have emerged otherwise. Bring your favorite images or objects to paint, or use those provided by the instructor. Use your watercolor materials or see the materials list on the website for suggestions.

Add faces and portraits to your repertoire of imagery! Learn to see and interpret the forms that comprise the human face, and put this to work in your paintings. We’ll start by drawing, to build confidence in capturing a likeness, and move on to acrylic and oil painting. We’ll cover: selecting painting materials, choosing images and personal painting themes, experimenting with compositional sketches, transferring images onto canvas, understanding warm and cool color composition, the value of grouping values, dynamic brushstrokes and edges, and how to know when your painting is finished. We'll address those questions by examining some of the concepts behind abstract painting, develop some jumping-off points for how to begin, learn techniques to develop your work in progress and discuss approaches to determining a painting's success and completion. Bring your own supplies to work either in oil or acrylic paint. This class will include painting demonstrations, peer critiques and plenty of helpful guidance.

Learn simple, time-honored approaches to simplify a scene and capture a sense of the light that day. Most important, this class will teach you that plein air painting is really about learning how to see: seeing space, seeing subtle value relationships, and seeing color. Oils have a workability unlike other painting mediums. They also feel connected to art history. Learn the basics of the medium: how they work, feel, and react to other colors and substrates; how they can be applied to a surface with brush, knife, or finger (with a glove on!). We won't be painting masterpieces (just yet), but we'll be playing a lot, mixing colors and developing a feeling for how paint comes off your brush, and how you make marks. Learn a method of layering paint that Flemish and Renaissance masters used. Layer by layer you'll develop the form, distinctive values, gradation of edges and the development of half-tones and highlights. Great for both beginners and intermediate to advanced students who would like to learn this traditional process for creating artwork that has both depth and complexity. Have fun working in oils using the all prima method (at first attempt or wet-on-wet) with relative measurements. You'll be introduced to four major elements of successful painting and finish an oil painting in three to four sittings. You'll learn to limit the color palette at the opening and expand the palette for finishing; how to use mediums, when, and why, and how to increase the speed of your decisions on the canvas.
