(B) Beginner
No experience with the medium or need fundamental knowledge of techniques and materials.
(AB) Advanced Beginner
Need more instruction or a refresher on fundamental techniques or need help to solve basic problems with the medium.
(I) Intermediate
Already have completed work in the medium and may have begun exhibiting. Able to solve many problems independently, developing design and composition skills, want to try or experiment with a variety of techniques.
(AD) Advanced
Able to work independently and seeks critique from instructor or peers. Have a developed style and can discuss the concept behind the work and may have begun the process of creating a resume and portfolio.
(ALL) All Skill Levels
Open to students at all levels (See Studio.)

Studio
Studio format classes offer a relaxed, work-at-your pace atmosphere. There are no instructor lead projects, rather the instructor is there to help a student when asked, and to offer suggestions and demonstrate techniques as needed.

This course is an exploration of abstract painting in acrylic or oil with an emphasis on the formal principles of art that are vital to balanced compositions. You will expand your knowledge and use of those principles as you develop your personal style. Students work at their own pace on a series of abstract paintings with friendly critiques and individual guidance. New students, please use the materials list on our website.

Using James Gurney's book as a guide, you will tap into your imagination and learn to create unique creatures and impossible environments using elements from the natural world. You'll learn to render forms, including animals, landscapes, and architecture, using solid construction and proportion techniques. You will go step-by-step from conceptualization, using reference photos and building maquette, to tonal rendering, applying color, adding details and finishing. Please bring a copy of James Gurney's "Imaginative Realism: How to Paint What Doesn't Exist," and use the materials list on the website.

Learn to use your favorite photos as the basis for beautiful drawings and paintings using the medium of your choice. You will learn how to transfer images onto a canvas and how to think about the overall composition including editing and adding elements that will improve the final piece. Learn basic composition, color mixing, brush techniques and more using acrylic paints in this beginning-level painting class. You'll start with rendering still life objects using a limited palette and move on to more advanced still-life painting, landscapes, and basic portrait-painting techniques. E463W20 Portrait Painting in Oils, An Introduction [NEW!]

Portraits can be quite intimidating for those who have never painted a human form or aimed for the likeness of a sitter. In this workshop you will focus on portrait exercises and practical application rather than creating a portrait of a specific person. You will learn about facial anatomy, its effects on facial planes and how to create facial perspective through foreshortening of features. You'll learn practical techniques for creating a composition, mixing skin tones, hair color and creating a palette, softening edges and creating highlights and shadows. Lots of demonstration and time for painting practice. Some experience with oil painting is recommended. A materials list is on the website. Café is open on Friday. Bring lunch for the hour break on Saturday.

Create realistic bird paintings with oils or acrylic paints. You'll learn basic bird anatomy from wing positions and bird feet to head tilts and beak placement. You'll learn how to model the form, depict the texture of feathers and create a background that puts the bird into its environment. Work from your own photos or instructor photos provided. Learn a method of layering paint that Flemish and Renaissance masters used. The building is closed for Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve through New Year's Day*, Memorial Day and the last week in August through Labor Day.* There is no open studio when the building is closed. 

 

* Phone lines will be open Monday-Friday, excluding holidays, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. to take class registrations.
