Have you always wanted to learn to paint but aren't sure where to start? In this beginning level class, you will be introduced to basic painting techniques using either acrylic or water-based oil paints. The instructor will take you step by step through a series of painting exercises that will build your skill level and confidence. Open to the beginner pastel artist or more experienced painter, this class will help participants gain confidence in the use of the versatile pastel medium. Classes will be informative and relaxed and there will be ample painting time. There will be discussions and demonstrations on topics such as application techniques, value, color, design and composition. Bring your own landscape photos and regular pastel materials. A beginner’s supply list is available from the Registrar if requested.

Horses have been depicted in art since people were painting in caves, but they are surprisingly tricky to draw and paint. Starting with the head, neck and shoulders of a horse, you'll learn basic proportions and anatomy and create a simple portrait of a horse. Then progress to drawing the horses' body, movement, and musculature by creating full-body sketches of horses at rest and in motion. You may use your own reference photos or those provided during class. Request a materials list from the Registrar.

Modern water-soluble oil paints and mediums give you all the richness of oils without the vapors. These work like traditional oils and clean up with soap and water. You’ll create an 8" x 10" prairie landscape (as simple or complex as you choose), and learn some basics about color mixing, layering paint, and creating 3-D depth.

You will create three or four 6" x 8" pochades (pocket paintings) working from life, pictures and/or your imagination. The goal is to paint expressively and quickly. Do you keep mixing mud instead of the colors you want? This beginner-friendly class is a great foundation for better color control. You’ll use acrylic paints (or your own oils if you would like to bring them) to explore the fundamentals of color in a relaxed, fun atmosphere. You’ll go home with a mixing sample sheet and plenty of notes for reference, including Tracie’s popular "How to Read a Paint Tube," which takes the confusion out of buying paints. Cafe is open for the half-hour break.

Explore collage and mixed media techniques that can be used to create finished collage works or be layered with your own original drawing/painting. The first class will focus on collage and image transfer techniques; the second class will look at additional techniques such as stencils and printmaking for added effect.
