Learn to paint like the Impressionists. The impressionistic approach to painting will help you gain an understanding of color and its relationships. You will explore the concepts of thick-over-thin use of paint, warm-over-cool colors, complementary colors, harmony, edges, shape/quality, values and simplifying and loosening brushwork. Each week a new still life will be set. You may bring photos, but it is suggested to work from life as much as possible. Request a materials list from the Registrar.

Oil paints are much friendlier than most people imagine. This relaxed, fun class will help you get started as you explore different brushes and the effects they create, basic color mixing (and how to buy paints with confidence), solvents and mediums and how to clean up. You'll work from still life and photos and learn about choosing subject matter, the basics of composition and how to create three-dimensional depth. Learn where to use hard edges, where to loosen the edge and how to create a passages from one area of the painting to another. Starting with a projector lesson and demonstrations of the techniques, students will then spend the afternoon applying the skills to painting a provided still life with instructor feedback. Create a realistic oil paint portrait from a photograph. No previous skills needed. You’ll learn how to transfer the photo to a canvas, understand value, mix skin tone, apply hair textures and create a proportional likeness in this relaxed class. Explore the magic of color and light and learn to mix and apply colors to create harmonic compositions. While this is not a color theory class it will be a great introduction to concepts surrounding hue, value, intensity and temperature. Demonstrations of different color concepts will be given. Students will be helped and critiqued on an individualized basis. All levels are welcome.
