Mixed media art can be as varied and unique as the artists and mediums themselves. Learn several collage and image transfer techniques to create base layers for drawings or paintings (oil or acrylic). Become aware of the endless possibilities that creative overlapping gives to any style of painting and drawing. You'll look at the work of old masters with a concepts presentation from U of MN professor David Feinberg, then try a hands-on drawing project to demonstrate and utilize the concepts. In the afternoon, projects in painting (any medium) will explore the relation of color and shape to creative overlapping. You'll discover the energy, rhythm and sequences, the push-and-pull and expressive tension, that overlapping creates. If you'd love to draw or paint your favorite pet, but don't know how to start, this workshop will give you confidence to jump in! With lots of instructor demonstration, we will cover the basics of taking good photos to work from, choosing the right size canvas or paper, and working with grids for accurate proportions. From there you'll learn basic structures of eyes and noses, how to create the texture of fur and capture the color of their coats -- even tricky black or white. Bring your favorite art materials, several images of your animal(s) on plain paper and a bag lunch for the half-hour break.

In this exciting, one-day experience you will learn encaustic techniques (molten beeswax painting). A brief history and description of encaustic painting will be shared as well as basic supplies and tools, safety, preparation of supports including application of grounds, fusing techniques and paint application. A variety of techniques will be demonstrated such as wax image transfers, mixing your own paint, creating texture and working with masks and stencils. The majority of time will be spent painting. Previous participants may work on individual projects with instructor guidance. All levels welcome. Materials included.

Do you have paintings that are 50-90% complete that you just haven’t finished? Maybe you haven’t set aside the time. Perhaps there is a compositional problem that keeps gnawing at you. In this workshop, you will bring two to five incomplete oil or acrylic works, get feedback, and put on the finishing touches. The instructor will help you identify and fix areas that are troublesome and match colors as needed. Bring your regular painting supplies. If you were working from a photo, bring the original photo as well. The Art Center Cafè is open for the half-hour break.

Paint and capture the changing light outside and push yourself to paint quickly. Your landscapes will come alive and your studio skills will improve too. There will be an emphasis on recognizing critical elements and rapid capture techniques. You will challenge yourself, make discoveries and learn to love painting in an outdoor setting. We will meet at the Art Center and paint at nearby locations. Bring a lunch for the half hour break. Request a materials list from the Registrar.

D412W18 Delve into Mixed Media [NEW!], Saturday, 9:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.

Express yourself with mixed media. You will explore several mixed media collage and image transfer techniques that can be used as a base layer for paintings (acrylic or oil). The primary focus will be on creating a base layer with some direction on developing the painting layers as time allows. The process is often delightfully unpredictable, so bring your sense of adventure! Two cradled panel supports and some materials provided. Request a list of things to bring from the Registrar. Some painting or drawing experience is recommended. Bring a lunch for the half-hour break.

Combine art history with art exploration as you learn about the Impressionist style by examining the work of Claude Monet. You'll learn about Monet's approaches to color, light and brushwork as you create your own Monet-inspired piece. Bring painting supplies in the medium of your choice (oils, acrylics or pastels) and a painting surface. Bring a lunch for the half-hour break.
