Mixed-Media Portraits /T, 7/21 - 9 AM
Instructor Name: April Malphurs
Skill Level: ALL

Let's create a unique self-portrait using mixed-media techniques. Whether realistic, abstract or symbolic, your personality will come through in delightful and surprising ways. You will learn about the well-known self-portrait paintings of Frida Kahlo, Vincent Van Gogh and others for inspiration, as well as read the fantastic book, "What a Family" by Rachel Isadora. Our portraits will combine drawing, painting and collage techniques with a variety of materials. Enrollment limited to 10.

Material needs: 9" x 12" construction paper, 12" x 18" thick white paper or watercolor paper, watercolor paints, water cup, brushes, and sponge. Any of the following drawing materials: crayons, pastels, markers or colored pencils. Any of the following: magazines, yarn or fabric scraps.

Special requirements: Plastic table cloth or place to work where it is okay to paint. Wear a paint shirt or old clothes.

Class format: Online live Zoom session(s) with MCFTA artist-instructor. After registering, MCFTA will email the Zoom meeting ID to you prior to class.

Pop Prints /Th, 7/23 - 9:00 AM

Skill Level: ALL

Learn the unique art of printmaking and make pattern prints and radial designs that will get rave reviews at home. Be inspired by the work of contemporary printmakers and create vibrant, bold prints using the simple materials of potatoes and sponges. Enrollment limited to 10.

Material needs: 3 potatoes (parents cut in half before class), sponges (parents cut into shapes - triangles, squares, rectangles, diamonds), tempera paints in 3-6 colors, and 12" x 18" paper (thick white paper or watercolor paper or construction paper).

Special requirements: Plastic table cloth or place to work where it is okay to paint. Wear paint shirt or old clothes.

Class format: Online live Zoom session(s) with MCFTA artist-instructor. After registering, MCFTA will email the Zoom meeting ID to you prior to class.

Painting in Color / T, 7/28 - 1 PM

Let’s expand our painting horizons inspired by American artist Wayne Thiebaud, who created colorful paintings of every day objects like pastries and paint cans. You will paint with a primary color palette, and create eye-catching paintings of desserts and more that are a feast for your eyes. Enrollment limited to 12. Registration open to 7-12 year olds (Groups B & C).

Material needs: pencil-eraser, pastel paper, watercolor paper, cardstock-white, tempera paints -primary colors, fluorescent tempera, paint brushes (assorted), paint tray, water cup, paper towels, Sharpies, oil pastel set with black and white.

Special requirements: cover tables, and wear a paint shirt.

Class format: Online live Zoom session(s) with MCFTA artist-instructor. After registering, MCFTA will email the Zoom meeting ID to you prior to class.

Mask-Making / 8/11 & 8/13 - 9 AM

Let's create mixed-media masks decorated with paints, feathers, beads and more. Create realistic animal masks that play with texture, color and patterns. Enrollment limited to 12.

Material needs: Two or more sheets of heavy white cardstock paper 12 x 18" size to cut mask blanks, various colors of construction paper or decorative paper, markers, crayons, pencil and eraser, tempera paint, water cup, brushes (assorted sizes), paper towel, sponge, glue, scotch tape, scissors and any fun embellishments like feathers, beads, buttons and rhinestones.

Special requirements: Paper or plastic table cloth and space where it is okay to get messy. Wear a paint shirt.

Class format: Online live Zoom session(s) with MCFTA artist-instructor. After registering, MCFTA will email the Zoom meeting ID to you prior to class.

Enrollment limited to: 12 / Ages 7 to 9
Classes scheduled every week on Tuesday and Thursday starting 8/11/2020 and ending 8/13/2020 at 9:00AM

  • Complete the information requested and continue.

  • Then click CONTINUE to add that session to your cart.

  • You can repeat this process for other sessions, classes, etc. before you checkout.

  • Please note that all Early Registration and New Student Discounts can only be processed by registering in-person or by phone. Discounts cannot be applied through our online registration process and discounts cannot be applied retroactively. These discounts can not apply to birthday parties, subsidized classes, or Summer Arts Camp (SAC). See SAC policies for other details specific to our summer camp program.

The building is closed for Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve through New Year's Day*, Memorial Day and the last week in August through Labor Day.* There is no open studio when the building is closed. 

 

* Phone lines will be open Monday-Friday, excluding holidays, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. to take class registrations.
