MULTIGENERATIONAL & FAMILY WORKSHOPS

 
  • FAMILY: Indicates an intergenerational workshop with art activities for adults and children to do together. Children must be accompanied by an adult and adults accompanied by a child. All materials are included for making a treasure to take home and memories to keep forever! Prices are per person.
  • MULTIGENERATIONAL: Indicates a workshop that welcomes students of most ages (see class description for age range).

Fun with Paper! 2D - Online Format/Zoom Class
DESCRIPTION: 3 imaginative weeks of art lessons with simple supplies and clean up! Explore the fun things we can do with paper! Learn about collage artists such as Romare Bearden, Eric Carle, Leo Leoni, Ellen Stoll Walsh, Lois Elhert, Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse and more. Next students will create your own works of art from your imagination and memory. We will focus on cut and torn paper techniques and mixed media.

OBJECTIVE: Students will express their own creative ideas using cut and torn paper to create collage and mixed media works of art.

SUPPLIES NEEDED to have on hand: Glue bottle (liquid), scissors, construction paper, patterned paper (scrapbook or origami), old magazines, newspaper or printed pictures from the internet. Optional fabric scraps and yarn.

SKILL LEVEL: Elementary students
AGES: 5-10 years

Multi-Generational Workshop: Nature-Inspired Art
DESCRIPTION: Whether you are sitting next to or meeting up on zoom, time spent together makes memories forever. Grab a special child/teen in your life and join me to create art with Nature. Or if your kids are missing someone from across the country, connect with them to create art. We will be inspired by ephemeral artists such as Andy Goldsworthy, Nils-Udo, and Richard Shilling, and illustrator, Lois Elhert, then using color, pattern and nature, create works of art of your own and photograph them.

OBJECTIVE: Through discussion and exploration, students will learn that nature can be arranged to create patterns, designs and pictures.

SUPPLIES NEEDED to have on hand for class: Go on a nature walk to collect leaves of various colors, sticks, acorns, flowers, small rocks…anything you find that inspires you or catches your eye. Also be sure to have a camera or phone with a camera on hand.

SKILL LEVEL: Any
AGE: Pair of 1 adult and 1 youth (ages 4-104)

Fun with Paper! 3D - Online Format/Zoom Class
DESCRIPTION: 4 exciting weeks of art lessons with simple supplies and clean up! Explore the fun things we can do with paper! We will focus on ways to fold, curl, tear, bend, stack, balance, and lean paper to create wonderful art from our imaginations. We will look at sculptures by Nancy Graves, Nick Cave, Barbara Bullock and more. Our 3D creations will include puppets, crazy hats and sculptures in relief and in the round.

OBJECTIVE: Students will express their own imaginative ideas while learning how to transform flat, 2D paper into a 3D sculptural material.

SUPPLIES NEEDED to have on hand: Glue bottle (liquid), scissors, construction paper, patterned paper (scrapbook or origami), toilet paper tubes, some cards stock, shoe box or other shallow box, stapler for hats, and your imagination!

SKILL LEVEL: elementary students
AGES: 5-10 years

Irregular classes scheduled starting 11/3/2020 and ending 12/1/2020 at 9:00AM

Multi-Generational Workshop: Silly Selfies
DESCRIPTION: Whether you are sitting next to or meeting up on zoom, time spent together makes memories forever. Grab a special child/teen in your life and join me to create multi-media self-portraits. Or if your kids are missing someone from across the country, connect with them to create art. We will first explore self-portraiture by VanGogh, Chuck Close, Cindy Sherman, and Frieda Kahlo, then discuss the modern selfie and Snapchat filters before creating our own mixed media silly selfies.

OBJECTIVE: Through discussion and exploration, students will learn ways to use paper to create 3D effects which can be combined with drawing materials to create humorous self-portraits.

SUPPLIES NEEDED to have on hand for class: Glue, scissors, construction paper, patterned scrap book paper, crayons, markers, or oil pastels and a mirror.

SKILL LEVEL: Any
AGES: Pair of 1 adult and 1 youth (ages 4-104)
INSTRUCTOR: April Malphurs

  • Please note that all Early Registration and New Student Discounts can only be processed by registering in-person or by phone. Discounts cannot be applied through our online registration process and discounts cannot be applied retroactively. These discounts can not apply to birthday parties, subsidized classes, or Summer Arts Camp (SAC). See SAC policies for other details specific to our summer camp program.

The building is closed for Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve through New Year's Day*, Memorial Day and the last week in August through Labor Day.* There is no open studio when the building is closed. 

 

* Phone lines will be open Monday-Friday, excluding holidays, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. to take class registrations.
