Museums include the Minneapolis Institute of Art, the Walker Art Center, the Museum of Russian Art, and the Weisman Art Museum. Last class meets at the instructor's studio at the Traffic Zone Center for Visual Art in Minneapolis to debrief and discuss our museum experiences. A41824 Art Journaling - The Stories We Tell Ourselves, Mondays, 1 - 4 p.m.
Instructor: Emily Niemeyer
Skill level: ALL

Guided, therapeutic expression through art can help us to deepen our understanding of the self-narratives we hold and support us to move alongside them with greater clarity and acceptance. Each week, we’ll pose new questions and themes to explore while trying out new mediums of visual expression. We’ll use our inner lives, past, present, and future as inspiration points. Combining Behavior Therapy with art-making, class time will include both reflection and art making. We will end each session by sharing how "arting it out" - whether representationally or abstractly - gives us more insight into some aspect of our stories or selves. Suggested materials list on the website.

Instructor: Mary McKee

Students will have the opportunity to learn basic Italic, Uncials and Gothic lettering styles, to discover which style suits them best. Using a double nib marker and Parallel ink pens, students will be introduced to lettering styles, different papers and pens while learning how to train their eye to understand and create beautiful calligraphy. See suggested materials list on the website.

B419W24 Self-Exploration and Identity: An Artful Study, Mondays, 1:00 - 4:00 p.m.
Instructor: Emily Niemeyer
Skill level: ALL

Combining Behavioral Therapy with multi-media art exploration, we’ll use the process of art-making to foster increased awareness of ourselves as artists. We’ll get curious about how we approach art and visit themes such as limit, risk, rules and evaluation in art-making. Specific activities will be introduced that participants can adapt for further self exploration. We’ll identify the motivations and satisfactions that drive us to create and identify the barriers that might hold us back. We will have the chance to try different mediums each week as we fill our sketchbooks with studies, experiments, and explorations into our artful selves. Each medium will be introduced with a demonstration, and all skill levels are welcome. Suggested materials list on the website.
