Skill level: AB, I
Using seasonal flowers from the gardens as inspiration, students will paint from live flowers in the studio. You will learn how to use value, color temperature and intensity contrast to create dynamic florals. Topics will include composing your painting, creating contrast, using negative space, mixing colors and developing efficient brushwork. Bring your regular watercolor supplies and Arches 140 lb. paper.

Make your city or landscape come alive by adding figures. This watercolor class will teach you how to incorporate people into your paintings and how to make them look like they belong. You will learn a dropdown method for painting the firgures and techniques for placing them in perspective space. Bring your regular watercolor materials.

This class is for advanced beginner watercolor artists who want to start working on their own subject matter using photographic reference materials. You'll learn compositional design and develop a point of view for each piece. You will practice simplifying visual elements and value planning to help achieve your vision. Students will receive individual coaching and work at their own pace while applying their core watercolor skills to new works.

This class is designed for intermediate to advanced watercolor painters to pursue individual projects in the American style of botanical painting. Each student will select a botanical subject and develop their painting process through plant selection, process drawings, composition and color and value development with guidance from the instructor. The instructor will introduce painting methods, techniques, design and current literature as needed. Bring your watercolor supplies and hot-pressed paper. Prerequisite: Some watercolor painting experience or Contemporary Botanicals I.

Learn how to draw and paint botanical subjects in the contemporary American style. Beginning students will draw a leaf focusing on contours and vein structure, moving on to twigs and seedpods. Intermediate students will select a botanical subject and work on process drawings, composition, value development and/or an introduction of botanical painting. Explore colored pencils if interested. The instructor will introduce methods, techniques and design as needed. New students please request a materials list from the Registrar. Prerequisite: Drawing Basics or Beginning Watercolor. Continue your botanical studies with Contemporary Botanicals II.

Don't give up on that painting yet. Find out how to rescue it. Sometimes you need a pair of trained eyes to help you see and fix a problem painting. In this class you will bring in unfinished paintings and learn to analyze issues and problem solve solutions. Don't despair. Most paintings can be improved with a small amount of effort. Bring your regular watercolor supplies and two to four unfinished watercolor paintings.

This watercolor workshop explores how color and light intertwine when reflected off glass and a variety of metallic surfaces. By focusing on the initial drawing and masking of whites, you will learn how to portray realistic surfaces that shine. Lots of exercises, value and color studies, demonstrations and step-by-step painting instruction. The Art Center Café is open for the half-hour lunch break.
