No experience with the medium or need fundamental knowledge of techniques and materials.

Need more instruction or a refresher on fundamental techniques or need help to solve basic problems with the medium.
(I) Intermediate
Already have completed work in the medium and may have begun exhibiting. Able to solve many problems independently, developing design and composition skills, want to try or experiment with a variety of techniques.
(AD) Advanced
Able to work independently and seeks critique from instructor or peers. Have a developed style and can discuss the concept behind the work and may have begun the process of creating a resume and portfolio.
(ALL) All Skill Levels
Open to students at all levels (See Studio.)

Studio
Studio format classes offer a relaxed, work-at-your pace atmosphere. There are no instructor lead projects, rather the instructor is there to help a student when asked, and to offer suggestions and demonstrate techniques as needed.

Interested in botanical art? Want to see if it is right for you? This workshop will introduce you to the world of creating accurate and artistically beautiful representations of plants. You will learn to observe and creatively transfer what you see to paper as you explore the values and texture of a botanical subject. Lots of samples, demos, and encouragement. Each student will select a botanical subject and develop their painting or drawing through plant selection, process drawings, composition, and color and value development with guidance from the instructor. The instructor will introduce painting and drawing methods, techniques, design and current literature as needed. Bring your watercolor supplies and hot-pressed paper. Prerequisite: watercolor painting experience or Contemporary Botanicals I. April classes may be taught by Mary Anne O'Malley.

An opportunity to explore incorporating birds, butterflies, and insects into the artwork will be available for interested students. This encouraging class will help you develop a daily sketch practice through urban sketching. You'll deepen your skill and enjoyment of drawing and water media techniques while seeing the city with the eyes of an "andarilho," a word in Portuguese meaning the wanderer or explorer. Making quick sketches and paintings using limited color palettes, color temperature and the importance of tonal value will be covered. All levels and portable color mediums are welcome. Bring (at minimum) a sketchbook and pen/pencil to the first class. Suggested reading: "The Art of Urban Sketching: Drawing on location around the world" by Gabriel Campanario. This is a perfect class for everyone who travels or wants to capture their hometown in art.

Use your drawing and watercolor skills to illustrate an idea, story or concept. You'll learn a process for creating a concept and image from an idea and then how to use watercolor paints to bring it to life. The first day will be developing initial concepts and drawings. During the second class, you'll learn illustrator techniques for watercolor painting, such as ways to paint objects, create stylized imagery, and add creative lettering. The building is closed for Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve through New Year's Day*, Memorial Day and the last week in August through Labor Day.* There is no open studio when the building is closed. 

 

* Phone lines will be open Monday-Friday, excluding holidays, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. to take class registrations.
