E45219 Farmer's Market Watercolor [NEW!] Mondays 9 am - Noon (Sold Out)

A farmer’s market is a perfect venue for exploring the colors, forms and shadows of fruits, vegetables, flowers and figures. In this AB-I level class, you'll learn how to view a subject as a series of shapes and values as well as how to crop and design a good composition from photos taken at an open market.

E47919 Still Life with Fabrics Watercolor [NEW!] Mondays, 12:30 - 3:30 pm
Instructor: Catherine Hearding
Skill level: I, AD

Add a level of interest to any still life painting by including fabric. Start with some favorite objects then add a contrasting or complementary fabric to create an engaging composition. You’ll learn how to paint the soft folds of fabric to create contrast against the hard edges of your subject and how to add shadows and glazes for depth and dimension.

E40019 Painting with Gouache, Tuesdays, 1 - 4 pm
Instructor: Fred Dingler
Skill level: B, AB, I

Gouache (pronounced Gwash) is a very bright and opaque water medium that works well for any art style or technique. It can be used with watercolors and works as a wash. It can act like acrylic and be painted in layers light over dark. Great for realistic work and more stable surfaces such as illustration board. In this class you will explore this wonderful, but lesser-known water media and learn why it has been called a super paint. Request a materials list from the Registrar and bring photo reference materials.

This class is for advanced beginner watercolor artists who want to start working on their own subject matter using photographic reference materials. You'll learn compositional design and develop a point of view for each piece. You will practice simplifying visual elements and value planning to help achieve your vision. Students will receive individual coaching and work at their own pace while applying their core watercolor skills to new works.

This class is designed for intermediate to advanced level students who wish to pursue individual projects in the American style of botanical art. Each student will select a botanical subject and develop their painting or drawing through plant selection, process drawings, composition, and color and value development with guidance from the instructor. The instructor will introduce painting and drawing methods, techniques, design and current literature as needed. Bring your watercolor supplies and hot-pressed paper. Prerequisite: watercolor painting experience or Contemporary Botanicals I.

E48019 Contemporary Botanicals I, Wednesdays 1 - 4 pm

Learn how to draw and paint botanical subjects in the contemporary American style. Beginning students will draw a leaf focusing on contours and vein structure, moving on to twigs and seedpods. Intermediate students will select a botanical subject and work on process drawings, composition, value development and/or an introduction of botanical painting. Explore colored pencils if interested. The instructor will introduce methods, techniques and design as needed. New students please request a materials list from the Registrar. Prerequisite: Drawing Basics or Beginning Watercolor. Continue your botanical studies with Contemporary Botanicals II.

E43319 Watercolor Techniques: Floral Expressions [NEW!] Wednesdays, 1 - 4 pm

Use clean color and simple shapes to create bold floral paintings in this class that focuses on advanced beginner watercolor techniques. You'll work on charging-in color and managing edges while painting supplied subject matter. Lots of demonstrations and individual coaching. Bring regular watercolor supplies and Arches 140# cold press paper. Prerequisite: Beginning Watercolor or equivalent experience.

Capture a special place, favorite trip or life journey as an illustrated map. A great addition to travel journals, you'll use watercolor or colored pencils to create an engaging composition that portrays a place, pathway or timeline that is meaningful to you. Designs may be literal or abstract, realistic or stylized, detailed or simplified. Previous drawing and/or watercolor experience is recommended but not essential. Request a materials list from the Registrar and come to the first class with a subject matter idea and any reference materials that would be helpful.
