This encouraging class will help you develop a daily sketch practice through urban sketching. You'll deepen your skill and enjoyment of drawing and water media techniques while seeing the city with the eyes of an "andarilho," a word in Portuguese meaning the wanderer or explorer. Making quick sketches and paintings using limited color palettes, color temperature and the importance of tonal value will be covered. All levels and portable color mediums are welcome. Bring (at minimum) a sketchbook and pen/pencil to the first class. Suggested reading: "The Art of Urban Sketching: Drawing on location around the world" by Gabriel Campanario. This is a perfect class for everyone who travels or wants to capture their hometown in art.

You'll get tips on how to bring out your furry family member's unique personality You'll learn how to mix the colors that create warm highlights and cool shadows which give animal portraits a realistic look. Majestic trees and stunning lakes are two of the most popular subjects to paint. This watercolor workshop will explore landscapes that have both elements. You'll explore painting trees both as background and close-up and capturing the look of water from smooth and reflective to stormy and dark. Lots of exercises, value and color studies, demonstrations, and step-by-step painting instruction. Bring regular watercolor supplies and Arches 140# cold press paper or use Catherine's general list on the website. Café is open on Friday. Bring lunch for the half-hour break on Saturday.

Use your drawing and watercolor skills to illustrate an idea, story or concept. You'll learn a process for creating a concept and image from an idea and then how to use watercolor paints to bring it to life. The first day will be developing initial concepts and drawings. During the second class, you'll learn illustrator techniques for watercolor painting, such as ways to paint objects, create stylized imagery, and add creative lettering. Drawing experience is recommended. A materials list is on the website.  Café is open for the half-hour break.

The building is closed for Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve through New Year's Day*, Memorial Day and the last week in August through Labor Day.* There is no open studio when the building is closed. 

 

* Phone lines will be open Monday-Friday, excluding holidays, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. to take class registrations.
