Skill Level: ALL
Learn to mix clean, vibrant color without fear or hesitation in this confidence building watercolor class. Explore concepts of color value, intensity and temperature and practice color mixing and application. We'll move beyond basic color theory and explore structured color schemes, strengthening color knowledge. You will learn strategies to paint for greater visual impact. We'll focus on quick color sketch exercises to understand concepts rather than completed paintings. Request a materials list from the Registrar.

This class will focus on winter landscapes with exercises and demonstrations using various watercolor techniques. This is a great class for Continuing Watercolor I and II students to brush up on saving the whites on your paper. You will complete at least one small painting each week. Bring enthusiasm and your regular watercolor supplies including a sturdy board for painting, 140 lb. cold press paper, paints, brushes and paper towels. Additional supplies will be discussed at the first class.

Each student will select a botanical subject and develop their painting process through plant selection, process drawings, composition and color and value development with guidance from the instructor. The instructor will introduce painting methods, techniques, design and current literature as needed. Bring your watercolor supplies and hot-pressed paper. Prerequisite: Some watercolor painting experience or Contemporary Botanicals I.

What does it take to achieve a person's likeness in watercolor? Come learn about facial proportions and how to capture facial tones, while exploring techniques for getting facial guidelines onto watercolor paper, glazing and managing lost and found edges. The instructor will provide reference photographs for the exercises, but participants may bring personal photographs for their projects. Bring a lunch or eat at the Art Center Cafè during the half-hour break. Request a materials list from the Registrar.

Play with different paint combinations to create the colorful sky effects that manifest at the beginning and end of the day. You will learn techniques to achieve gradation, harmony, unity and balance in your designs. Bring your regular watercolor supplies and Arches 140 lb. cold press paper. The instructor will have some special workshop supplies for you. Bring a bag lunch or eat at the Art Center Cafè for the half-hour break.

Capture a special place, favorite trip or life journey as an illustrated map. A great addition to travel journals, you'll use watercolor or colored pencils to create an engaging composition that portrays a place, pathway or timeline that is meaningful to you. Designs may be literal or abstract, realistic or stylized, detailed or simplified. Previous drawing and/or watercolor experience is recommended but not essential. Request a materials list from the Registrar and come to the first class with a subject matter idea and any reference materials that would be helpful.

Build your confidence in painting trees with watercolor in this fun, three-evening short course. Each class will focus on a different native Minnesota tree (oak, birch, and evergreens) and place them in a natural setting. All sessions include demonstrations and painting practice with supplied subject matter. Bring your regular watercolor paints, brushes and paper. A materials list is available from the Registrar if needed. This class is designed for people with some watercolor experience, but ambitious beginners are welcome.

Have fun illustrating food and natural subjects in this class that explores artistic design and creative problem solving. You will build observational and visual interpretation skills as you learn to render food, flora and fauna and create eye catching compositions with watercolor and/or colored pencils. Emphasis will be placed on visual storytelling and subject matter may be idealized and/or heavily stylized vs.simply rendered in a traditional sense. Previous drawing experience recommended.
