This class is designed for advanced-beginner to advanced level students who wish to pursue individual botanical art projects. Each student will select a botanical subject and develop their painting or drawing through plant selection, process drawings, composition, and color and value development with guidance from the instructor. An opportunity to explore incorporating birds, butterflies, and insects into the artwork will be available for interested students. The instructor will introduce painting and drawing methods, techniques, design and current literature as needed. Bring your botanical supplies and hot-pressed paper. Prerequisite: watercolor painting experience or Contemporary Botanicals I.

In watercolor, learning to use negative space is a requirement for producing a great painting. Develop your negative space "seeing" skills in this class that will teach you how to look at shapes and spaces instead of objects. Once you learn this way of seeing, painting becomes simpler and more efficient. Bring regular watercolor supplies or use Cathy's general list on the website.

This advanced beginner class will boost your skills in watercolor as you explore different techniques for capturing weather and ambient light. You'll focus on creating the atmospheric effects that are a hallmark of Minnesota: thundering rain, silent snow and bright blue skies. Each class includes step by step demonstrations and supplied subject matter. Bring watercolor supplies and Arches 140# cold press paper or use Sonja’s beginner list on the website. Prerequisite: Beginning watercolor or equivalent experience.

Subject matter may include still life setups, photographic reference material, imaginative images or abstraction. C47620 Intro to Urban Sketching, Thur 6-9

This encouraging class will help you develop a daily sketch practice through urban sketching. You'll deepen your skill and enjoyment of drawing and water media techniques while seeing the city with the eyes of an "andarilho," a word in Portuguese meaning the wanderer or explorer. Making quick sketches and paintings using limited color palettes, color temperature and the importance of tonal value will be covered. All levels and portable color mediums are welcome. Bring (at minimum) a sketchbook and pen/pencil to the first class. Suggested reading: "The Art of Urban Sketching: Drawing on location around the world" by Gabriel Campanario. This is a perfect class for everyone who travels or wants to capture their hometown in art.

Create a stylized letterform or monogram using watercolor or colored pencils. Choose a letter or group of letters significant to you and create an artistic piece rich with imagery, symbolism and visual storytelling. Work in any style from Medieval to Modern. Great for kids' rooms or as a meaningful wedding, anniversary, or graduation gift. A materials list is on the website.

The building is closed for Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve through New Year's Day*, Memorial Day and the last week in August through Labor Day.* There is no open studio when the building is closed. 

 

* Phone lines will be open Monday-Friday, excluding holidays, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. to take class registrations.
