Learn the unique techniques of watercolor painting in this class designed for the first-time watercolor artist and those wishing for a basic refresher course. You will be introduced to watercolor materials, methods and color mixing. Each class will begin with a new topic and demonstration, followed by a project designed to reinforce the presented skills. You'll learn compositional design and develop a point of view for each piece. You will practice simplifying visual elements and value planning to help achieve your vision. Students will receive individual coaching and work at their own pace while applying their core watercolor skills to new works.

This class is designed for intermediate to advanced watercolor painters to pursue individual projects in the American style of botanical painting. Each student will select a botanical subject and develop their painting process through plant selection, process drawings, composition and color and value development with guidance from the instructor. The instructor will introduce painting methods, techniques, design and current literature as needed. Bring your watercolor supplies and hot-pressed paper. Prerequisite: Some watercolor painting experience or Contemporary Botanicals I.

Learn how to draw and paint botanical subjects in the contemporary American style. Beginning students will draw a leaf focusing on contours and vein structure, moving on to twigs and seedpods. Intermediate students will select a botanical subject and work on process drawings, composition, value development and/or an introduction of botanical painting. Explore colored pencils if interested. The instructor will introduce methods, techniques and design as needed. New students please request a materials list from the Registrar. Prerequisite: Drawing Basics or Beginning Watercolor. Continue your botanical studies with Contemporary Botanicals II.

Learn to mix clean, vibrant color without fear or hesitation in this confidence building watercolor class! Explore concepts of color value, intensity and temperature and practice color mixing and application. We'll move beyond basic color theory and explore structured color schemes, strengthening color knowledge. You will learn strategies to paint for greater visual impact. Learn strategies to create stronger, more dynamic paintings. Exercises will encourage experimentation with elements of composition, including value, color, negative space, line, rhythm, balance and movement. You will learn techniques for thinking about the overall structure and organization of your paintings. The focus will be on exploring solutions to compositional problems rather than completing work. Learn how to apply paint and find color solutions to paint the high contrast of direct sunlight. You will explore techniques using warm and cool shadows to simulate light on different objects, including the figure. Learn how to mimic sunlight and create beautiful shadows by mixing color on the paper. Bring regular watercolor supplies and Arches 140# watercolor paper.

C40019 Painting with Gouache (Opaque Watercolors) [NEW!] Tuesdays, 1 - 4 p.m.

Gouache (pronounced Gwash) is a very bright and opaque water medium that works well for any art style or technique. It can be used with watercolors and works as a wash. It can act like acrylic and be painted in layers light over dark. Great for realistic work and more stable surfaces such as illustration board. In this class you will explore this wonderful, but lesser-known water media and learn why it has been called a super paint. Request a materials list from the Registrar and bring photo reference materials.
