This class is for adventurous watercolorists seeking inventive approaches to their work. We will build on natural forms and explore mood as content to emphasize the process of art and creative growth. You'll discover techniques that you can refine into your own unique artistic tools. Some risk taking is required. Bring basic watercolor supplies and Arches 140# cold press paper. Prerequisite: Watercolor I or equivalent experience.

This class is designed for intermediate to advanced level students who wish to pursue individual projects in the American style of botanical art. Each student will select a botanical subject and develop their painting or drawing through plant selection, process drawings, composition, and color and value development with guidance from the instructor. The instructor will introduce painting and drawing methods, techniques, design and current literature as needed. Bring your watercolor supplies and hot-pressed paper. Prerequisite: watercolor painting experience or Contemporary Botanicals I.

You'll learn compositional design and develop a point of view for each piece. You will practice simplifying visual elements and value planning to help achieve your vision. Students will receive individual coaching and work at their own pace while applying their core watercolor skills to new works. Bring regular watercolor supplies, or use Sonja's general materials list on our website.

Learn how to draw and paint botanical subjects in the contemporary American style. Beginning students will draw a leaf focusing on contours and vein structure, moving on to twigs and seedpods. Intermediate students will select a botanical subject and work on process drawings, composition, value development and/or an introduction to botanical painting. Explore colored pencils if interested. The instructor will introduce methods, techniques and design as needed. New students please use the materials list on the website. Prerequisite: Drawing Basics or Beginning Watercolor. Continue your botanical studies with Contemporary Botanicals II.

Learn to mix clean, vibrant color without fear or hesitation in this confidence building watercolor class! Explore concepts of color value, intensity and temperature and practice color mixing and application. We'll move beyond basic color theory and explore structured color schemes, strengthening color knowledge. You will learn strategies to paint for greater visual impact. We'll focus on quick color sketch exercises to understand concepts rather than completed paintings. A materials list is on the website.

Water is one of the most difficult things to paint, but endlessly fascinating. Focusing on still water, moving water and wave patterns, you will learn a three-step process to reduce a landscape to basic shapes and values, leaving out unnecessary detail and creating a unified and dynamic painting. Elements of basic landscape design, palette selection, paint application and expressive color will be explored as well as techniques to loosen up your watercolor style. The building is closed for Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve through New Year's Day*, Memorial Day and the last week in August through Labor Day.* There is no open studio when the building is closed.
