In this class, students continue their exploration of weave structures. The projects and lessons are more challenging and will lead the weaver further down the path of learning. You will become more confident in setting up your loom and making the ideas in your imagination become real. You'll receive help with your projects and experience weaving on a variety of looms.

For people who can warp looms and read drafts independently. This class studies more complex weave structures and often spends one portion studying a new weave structure, followed by individual exploration into a project of choice. Designing using a computer program is also covered.

Discover the age-old craft of creating whimsical rugs using fabric strips and a simple hook. You will learn the basics of rug hooking: design techniques including transfer methods, color planning, wool preparation, a variety of finishing techniques, and the rich traditions behind this folk art. Beginning students will work on creating a small mat using one of a variety of kit choices which may be purchased at the first class. Experienced students will work on their own designs and may bring a project in process. Request a materials list from the Registrar. Beginners' kit (includes hook) is an additional $30 plus tax.

Learn how dye wool with rich, earthy colors made from plants growing all around us. This class will cover growing, harvesting and preparing both dye materials and wool for truly unique fabrics to use in rug hooking, wool applique, sewing and quilting. Fee includes class notebook and some dyed wool samples. Students should bring pen or pencil and a plastic zip bag to take home wet samples. Cafè is open for the half-hour break.

Give basket weaving a try or enjoy a basket weaving refresher. This wonderful and functional basket transitions from a square woven base into a round basket with shaping guided by an oak Williamsburg handle. You will learn start/stop weaving, twinning, twill work and shaping. Finished size is approximately 9" round and 5" high, not including the handle. Materials included. Learn the ancient technique of off-loom bead weaving using the peyote stitch. You'll enjoy weaving seed beads together using a needle and thread to form beautiful patterns. This introductory class will teach you the basic peyote stitch and you'll create a one, two, or three-color woven design.

Make intricate, colorful narrow bands on equipment small enough to fit in your pocket. Tablet weaving dates back to the 8th century BCE and was used by many cultures to create sumptuous textiles. We will use a variety of sources for patterns to create our bands, which are suitable for book markers and trimmings on clothing, pillows, hats and tableware. The "loom" is a set of cards, which will be provided. Bring a lunch for the half-hour break.

Kumihimo is an ancient Japanese technique used to make beautiful cords. With beads added, it is a way to make beautiful bracelets. Learn to braid on a Kumihimo disk, create designs, add beads and make a closure without the need for jewelry findings. Materials included but students should bring a scissors, tape measure and a lunch for the half-hour break.

Add a warm glow to the holiday season with pretty felted luminarias. Learn traditional wet felting techniques using wool and a little soapy water. Add texture and other design embellishments using a variety of materials. Your luminarias are the perfect accent for the mantle, dinner table, or any spot that needs a little soft illumination. Make two in class. Bring 2-3 hand towels, 1 old bath towel, a plastic bag to carry home wet items and an apron (optional). Cafè is open for the half-hour break.
