Building on skills developed in Beginning Rug Hooking, this class welcomes any student wishing to expand their hooking technique on a larger project. Design composition, transferring methods, color planning and wool preparation will be explored. Students may bring a work in progress or start out designing their own rug. Supply resources will be discussed; materials are also available from the instructor for purchase through the Art Center shop. Costs depend on the project.

C775W17 Joy of Felting: Awesome Tote [NEW!], Friday, February 3, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m.

Explore the fascinating art of seamless feltmaking! Without knitting or sewing, create a durable tote bag using wool fibers and traditional felting techniques. This roomy tote carries everything from your art supplies to your laptop. You can even make it reversible. Learn a variety of embellishing techniques using prefelts, yarn and other natural fibers. Class fee includes fibers and supplies for the bag. Students provide their own handles. A variety of handle options will be discussed in class. Bring two or three hand towels and an old bath towel. We'll be working with water, so dress for mess; an apron is recommended. Bring a lunch or eat at the Art Center Café for the half-hour break.

Inkle looms are small, portable looms that allow the weaver to make belts, headbands, bookmarkers and other long, narrow pieces. Using Art Center looms, new students will learn to set up and weave a small project. Continuing students will expand their skills and learn a new pattern or technique. Bring a lunch or eat at the Art Center Café during the half-hour break.

This class introduces the pleasures of hand weaving. Using Art Center looms, you will learn all about setting up and weaving a small project. New weavers may make scarves, table linens, bags or other interesting objects. Both beginners and those wanting to refresh their weaving skills are welcome in this group. An additional $14 materials fee plus tax will be collected from first-time students.

In this class, students continue their exploration of weave structures. The projects and lessons are more challenging and will lead the weaver down a pleasurable path of learning. You will become more confident in setting up your loom and making the ideas in your imagination become real. You'll receive help with your projects and experience weaving on a variety of looms.

For people who can warp looms and read drafts independently. This class studies more complex weave structures and often spends one portion studying a new weave structure, followed by individual exploration into a project of choice. Designing using a computer program is also covered.

Discover the age-old craft of creating whimsical rugs using wool fabric strips and a simple hook. This class welcomes beginners and those wanting to sharpen their skills. Emphasis will be on hooking and finishing techniques, along with discussion on tools and the rich traditions behind this folk art. Students may bring a work in progress or choose from a variety of small mat kits, which may be purchased at the first class. Beginners' kit is an additional $25 plus tax.

Beginning weavers will learn how to set up the loom and weave a small project such as a scarf or table runner. Intermediate weavers will be instructed on a more challenging project. Use wax resist and learn to paint with dyes in traditional and modern batik methods. You will have fun painting with dyes on fabric and learning about dyes and resists and methods including dip dying. Materials included. You should have time to design, paint and finish two projects in this three-day workshop.

Kumihimo is an ancient Japanese technique used to make beautiful cords. With beads added, it is a way to make beautiful bracelets. Learn to braid on a Kumihimo disk, create designs, add beads and make a closure without the need for jewelry findings. Materials included but students should bring a scissors and tape measure. Bring a lunch or eat at the Art Center Café during the half-hour break.

D758W17 Punch Needle Embroidery [NEW!], Saturdays, March 25 and April 1, 9:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.

Punch needle embroidery is an age-old fiber art dating back to the Ancient Egyptians. Used throughout Europe to elaborately decorate ecclesiastical clothing, it is also know as thread painting because of the intricacy and texture that can be achieved. In this workshop, you will complete a small brooch or ornament using your own design or a template that will be available. Bring a punch needle, 6-inch embroidery hoop and small scissors. Cameo punch needle and hoop will also be available for purchase for $20 at the first class or you may use one of the instructor's. Project materials provided. Bring a lunch for the half-hour break.

Don't settle for colors you don't like. Change them! Learn to safely use fiber reactive and acid dyes. Bring yarns/fabrics for experiments in dyeing, overdyeing and choosing the correct dye techniques for various fibers. All dyes are supplied. Bring a lunch or eat at the Art Center Café during the half-hour break.
