(B) Beginner
No experience with the medium or need fundamental knowledge of techniques and materials.
(AB) Advanced Beginner
Need more instruction or a refresher on fundamental techniques or need help to solve basic problems with the medium.
(I) Intermediate
Already have completed work in the medium and may have begun exhibiting. Able to solve many problems independently, developing design and composition skills, want to try or experiment with a variety of techniques.
(AD) Advanced
Able to work independently and seeks critique from instructor or peers. Have a developed style and can discuss the concept behind the work and may have begun the process of creating a resume and portfolio.
(ALL) All Skill Levels
Open to students at all levels (See Studio.)

A fundamental class that may be a good entry into a new medium.
Studio
Studio format classes offer a relaxed, work-at-your pace atmosphere. There are no instructor lead projects, rather the instructor is there to help a student when asked, and to offer suggestions and demonstrate techniques as needed.

FS01PM20 Still Life Drawing / June 9 - 1 PM
Let’s make 2-D drawings come to life through texture. Learn how to easily create texture in drawings by varying pencil strokes, using hatch marks and building up tone. We will further develop our landscapes with collage layers of paper, paint or mixed media. Enrollment limited to 12. Registration open to 7-12 year olds (Groups B & C)

FS04PM20 Colored Pencils / June 18 - 1 PM
Colored pencils are versatile! There is a rainbow of color options out there. Wax colored pencils are a joy to blend to create rich color combinations. Watercolor colored pencils are water-soluble, so can be used for drawing and painting equally well. Build your colored pencil art skills through sketches and short drawing activities. FS05AM20 Clay Pinch Pots / June 29 - 9 AM
Clay pinch pots can be shaped in surprising ways. With a basic pinch pot shape, you will create a cereal bowl to use every day, or a magical creature to decorate your room. The possibilities of this handbuilding technique are endless! Projects will be decorated with colored slips and glazed for finishing and ready for pickup in three weeks. Enrollment limited to 12. Let’s get our hands muddy in the clay studio. You will learn handbuilding techniques such as pinch, coil or slab to create whimsical garden art. Then experiment with texture tools and stamps to give our garden art pizazz. Projects will be decorated with colored slips and glazed for finishing and ready for pickup in three weeks. FS06AM20 Mixed-Media Masks / June 30 - 9 AM
Let’s make masks from paper, paints, fiber and found objects that can be either representational or abstract. You will sculpt, paint and decorate your mask bases, transforming them into colorfully-patterned masks that will be a treat to wear. Enrollment limited to 12. FS06PM20 Gyotaku Prints / June 30 - 1 PM
Gyotaku is a traditional Japanese method of printing fish that was used by fishermen to record their catches while out at sea. These fish prints have developed into an art form. Using the art center’s rubber molds created from real fish and sea life, you will apply ink with a brayer to create colorful and interesting relief Gyotaku prints. Enrollment limited to 12. Registration open to 7-12 year olds (Groups B & C)

Fashion accessories and jewelry take an eco-art tilt in this sampler. You’ll see how upcycled t-shirts, magazine paper, bottle caps and wire can become fashionable accessories like one-of-a-kind necklaces and bracelet cuffs. FS07PM20 Weave It! / July 1 - 1 PM (Sold Out)
Using a simple loom and a treasure trove of colorful yarns and fabric strips at the art center, you’ll create a woven art piece. Learn the basic vocabulary of weaving such as warp and weft yarn, plain weave, playing with texture and pattern by adding rya knots or upcycled fabric, and finishing a piece so it’s ready to hang on a wall. Experience the art of mosaic, creating images by arranging small pieces, or tessarae, which can be made from ceramic, glass, trinkets and more. See how colors can blend, swirl and pop in our paintings. Colorful marbling and kaleidoscopic effects will inspire this camp. GS14PM20 Filling the Void (Clay) / July 30 - 1 PM
Explore both the positive and the negative space in sculpture, and make your own art sculpture out of air-dry clay to emphasize the hollows and open spaces. You will begin with a block of clay that you carve into to create interesting holes. Learn and explore various texture methods to draw people’s eyes to those empty spaces in our sculptures. GS16PM20 Happy Watercolors / Aug 13 - 1 PM
Let’s make our watercolor paintings even livelier by focusing on texture! Instead of just using our brushes, you will dab, sponge and add simple ingredients while the paint is wet to make the surface texture exciting. Let’s embrace both the expected and unexpected results of watercolors. Enrollment limited to 12. The building is closed for Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve through New Year's Day*, Memorial Day and the last week in August through Labor Day.* There is no open studio when the building is closed. 

 

* Phone lines will be open Monday-Friday, excluding holidays, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. to take class registrations.
