Mix your painter's palette to create a rainbow of warm and cool colors of all hues. Learn basic brush handling skills and color mixing, and put these skills to use creating expressive paintings inspired by the Masters. Every day, you will gain new insights into painting in watercolor, acrylic and/or tempera, and get a better sense of the special painting techniques and qualities of each media. Rainforests are home to amazingly diverse insect and bird species. Let’s make artwork inspired by colorful winged creatures of all sorts. Let’s make 2-D drawings come to life through texture. Learn how to easily create texture in drawings by varying pencil strokes, using hatch marks and building up tone. Join us for a week of creating fashion accessories and fiber arts projects to decorate your bedroom. All our fashion projects will highlight trends in fiber arts like embroidery, pom-pom making and bracelet knotting techniques. After an introduction to basic sewing construction, you’ll create projects to dress up your room like cheery appliqués for pillows or a rainbow-colored woven wall hanging. Enrollment limited to 16.

You will bend, fold, cut and collage paper to make awesome art that tells a unique story and might become a favorite decoration in your room! Colored pencils are versatile! There is a rainbow of color options out there. Wax colored pencils are a joy to blend to create rich color combinations. Watercolor colored pencils are water-soluble, so can be used for drawing and painting equally well. Build your colored pencil art skills through sketches and short drawing activities. B202AM20 Clay Creations /June 22-26 - 9 AM
What creature has special meaning for you? An elephant for luck? A brave and loyal dog? Practice handbuilding skills like slab, pinch and coil, and use a variety of tools to sculpt your animal’s features. Your animals may be stand-alone figurines or attached to handbuilt pots that you use everyday. You can even create animal drawings on pottery that you paint with vibrant underglazes and slips. Projects will be glazed and fired, ready for pickup in three weeks. Enrollment limited to 16.

Let’s explore some of the wonders found in natural history museums through art. You'll make plaster casts that look just like fossils and gems that catch the eye. You will draw, paint and sculpt artwork inspired by early civilizations from thousands of years ago. Practice observational drawing as you sketch and paint plants, shells and rocks. Clay pinch pots can be shaped in surprising ways. With a basic pinch pot shape, you will create a cereal bowl to use every day, or a magical creature to decorate your room. Let’s get our hands muddy in the clay studio. You will learn handbuilding techniques such as pinch, coil or slab to create whimsical garden art. FS06PM20 Gyotaku Prints / June 30 - 1 PM
Gyotaku is a traditional Japanese method of printing fish that was used by fishermen to record their catches while out at sea. These fish prints have developed into an art form. Using the art center’s rubber molds created from real fish and sea life, you will apply ink with a brayer to create colorful and interesting relief Gyotaku prints. Enrollment limited to 12. Fashion accessories and jewelry take an eco-art tilt in this sampler. You’ll see how upcycled t-shirts, magazine paper, bottle caps and wire can become fashionable accessories like one-of-a-kind necklaces and bracelet cuffs. FS07PM20 Weave It! / July 1 - 1 PM
Using a simple loom and a treasure trove of colorful yarns and fabric strips at the art center, you’ll create a woven art piece. Learn the basic vocabulary of weaving such as warp and weft yarn, plain weave, playing with texture and pattern by adding rya knots or upcycled fabric, and finishing a piece so it’s ready to hang on a wall. Comics, cartoons and films in popular culture are the inspiration for this printmaking and painting camp. Your original drawings of a favorite character become prints and/or vibrant paintings. Create multiple prints with water-based inks and brayers, and paint like artists in the Pop Art movement from America to Japan. Learn color theory, color mixing and artistic tricks that will expand your artistic horizon. Enrollment limited to 16.

First you will choose an environment like the swamp, desert or jungle. Then you'll create shelters, natural landscapes and animals with mixed-media art techniques. Join us in the clay studio where you’ll learn handbuilding and surface design techniques while having a lot of fun. Perhaps you’ll make a mug that has a little emoji smiley face at the bottom or a tray with a unicorn drawing on it. How about a bobble head or a sweet-and-not-too-scary monster figurine? You’ll see examples of pottery that will make you smile, and then add your own sense of humor to your creation. Projects will be glazed and fired, ready for pickup in three weeks. This camp sees landscapes from a fresh perspective. You may paint from the perspective of a bug in the grass, or from a birds-eye view where houses, farms and cities resemble a patchwork quilt. Come experiment with a variety of painting surfaces and styles with watercolor and acrylic paints and mixed media. Sample projects are a textured relief mountain pass, desert plateaus at sunset, or island views from the sky. Enrollment limited to 16.

Collage author-illustrators Leo Leoni, Lois Ehlert, Eric Carle and Ellen Stoll Walsh inspire this book art camp. You will paint your own papers using a variety of fun ways to splatter, marbleize, drip, splot and more, and then cut and tear the papers to create collage pictures. Then you’ll write and edit your story and assemble your collages into a published book. On the last class we will read aloud from our published books! Enrollment limited to 16.

GS14PM20 Filling the Void (Clay) / July 30 - 1 PM
Explore both the positive and the negative space in sculpture, and make your own art sculpture out of air-dry clay to emphasize the hollows and open spaces. You will begin with a block of clay that you carve into to create interesting holes. Learn and explore various texture methods to draw people’s eyes to those empty spaces in our sculptures. This camp is for everyone who LOVES slime. You will make your own concoctions of multicolored slime, and then create art projects that are perfect with a side of slime. Let's create mixed-media masks decorated with paints, feathers, beads and more. Make a mask of your favorite comic or fantasy character, from superheroes to unicorns. Create realistic animal masks that play with texture, color and patterns. You will also draw and paint scenes for your masked characters, and maybe even make a costume prop or two for a masquerade. Let’s make our watercolor paintings even livelier by focusing on texture! Your artist palette will be awash in color, from warm and cool to bright neon and metallic colors. In this kaleidoscopic painting camp, you will paint a still life in complementary colors and experiment with painting techniques to create sunlit landscapes like Pointillism and Impressionism. You’ll even add special color effects to a night sky, painting the Northern Lights or a neon-lit cityscape. Enrollment limited to 16.

Immerse yourself in fables and fairy tales, and free up your imagination to draw, paint and sculpt your own fantasy world. You will create magical creatures and characters, first sketched and then transformed into 3-D figures made out of air-dry clay, paper, wood and more. Dream up the world for your character with colored pencils, markers and watercolor paints - whether it is a space station or an enchanted castle. Enrollment limited to 16.

The building is closed for Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve through New Year's Day*, Memorial Day and the last week in August through Labor Day.* There is no open studio when the building is closed. 

 

* Phone lines will be open Monday-Friday, excluding holidays, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. to take class registrations.
