Kenojuak Ashevak (1927-2013) was an Inuit artist whose prints, drawings and paintings are widely celebrated in Canada and around the world. While living in Cape Dorset, Canada, she drew animals and birds from her imagination, and these designs became relief prints and even stained glass. The morning class will use colored pencils, markers and watercolor paint to create artwork inspired by Ashevak’s The Enchanted Owl. The afternoon class will see Ashevak’s Wolves in Spring print, and then create wildlife prints of their own. Enrollment limited to 12.

Starting with a wash of blue in our sky, young artists will mix warm reds, oranges and yellows, and blend these colors on watercolor paper to make a spectacular sunrise. You will make a few versions of sunrise paintings, such as a sunrise over Lake Minnetonka, catching the sun’s reflections on water, and a sunrise on land, complete with animal or tree silhouettes. Join an imaginary canoe expedition to the Boundary Waters to spot wildlife to draw and paint, such as a swimming moose or a loon paddling and fishing for minnows. Next, you’ll create sea creatures to accompany your jellyfish, including colorful fish and sea turtles. Claire Kelly is an American glass artist who has studied the art of Venetian glassblowing. She shapes glass into sculptures of animals and their worlds, full of color, pattern and organic shapes. The morning class will learn about Kelly’s glass elephant sculptures, and then draw and paint their own elephant in a special landscape. The afternoon class will make mixed-media sculptures out of paper, plastic, wood shapes, glass beads and more, inspired by Kelly’s glass fox and tree sculpture, Parallax: Busy Forest. The building is closed for Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve through New Year's Day*, Memorial Day and the last week in August through Labor Day.* There is no open studio when the building is closed. 

 

* Phone lines will be open Monday-Friday, excluding holidays, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. to take class registrations.
