Origami for Young Minds / June 21-23 - 10 AM
This class is for young minds to learn the art of paper folding. Each day you will have fun making new folds and seeing new ways to shape paper. A variety of basic origami folds will be taught. We will let our imaginations guide us to creating unique works of art. The possibilities are endless! Enrollment limited to 10.

Material needs: White printer paper, crayons or markers, and glue (either glue sticks or Elmer’s, camper choice). The origami paper kit will be mailed to you prior to the class. The kit is included in the class tuition. Registration deadline is June 7th to allow for kit delivery.

Special requirements: Table and chair, and clear space to work.

Balancing Act / T, 6/22 - 9 AM
Let’s make sculptures from recyclable materials that push the boundaries of our imagination and gravity. Explore new ways to stack, lean, support, hang and cantilever everyday materials to make one-of-a-kind sculptures. You will learn how sculptors explore symmetry and asymmetry, and balance and imbalance in their artwork. View spectacular designs created by master sculptors and architects for your art-making inspiration. Enrollment limited to 10.

Art Inspiration: Sculptors Nancy Graves, Jeroen Stok, Beverly Pepper, Henry Moore and Nick Cave. Architects Jean Nouvel, Zaha Hadid, Frank Lloyd Wright and I.M. Pei.

Material needs: Scissors, glue, construction paper or white paper, and yarn. Recycled materials like small cereal or shoebox sized boxes, egg cartons, toilet paper and/or paper towel tubes.

Special requirements: Cover table with newspaper or plastic tablecloth.

Me, Myself & I (Collage) / Th, 7/1 - 2 PM
Create life-sized self-portraits with paper collage techniques. In paper collage, shapes are cut and torn from paper to make a whole image. We will look at what makes each of us special, and then create our distinctive features -from our eyes to our chin - all with a scissors, paper, and glue. See diverse styles of self-portraits painted by artists from around the world, past and present, and enjoy listening to stories celebrating the self and family. Enrollment limited to 10.

Art Inspiration: Visual artists Tyler Clark, Tawny Chatmon, Kahinde Wiley, Frida Kahlo and Pablo Picasso. Children’s books The Skin You Live In by Michael Tyler, and What a Family by Rachel Isadora.

Material needs: Scissors, glue, construction paper (Be sure to have colors for skin, hair and eyes to match your child.) Special requirements: Cover table with newspaper or plastic tablecloth.

Drawing Basics - Animals / M, 7/5 - 9 AM
Learning to draw helps children confidently express themselves on paper. This class will introduce tools and techniques and train the eye to see shapes and details. We will practice drawing animals with graphite pencils, colored pencils, crayons and/or markers. Campers will vote on which animal they would like to draw together as a class. You will draw the animal and some of its habitat! Enrollment limited to 10.
Material needs: Graphite pencil with eraser, pencil sharpener, crayons and/or oil pastels, water-based markers (can use fine and/or broad-tip markers). White sturdy drawing paper (5 sheets) and scrap paper. Optional: Colored pencils (Prang or Prismacolor brand are good options).

Special requirements: Cover table with newspaper or plastic tablecloth.

Comic Arts / F, 7/9 - 9 AM
If you enjoy cartoons and comics, this class is for you. You will draw an original comic character and a few scenes that follow your character’s adventures. First you will design your character’s face, body and outfit with pencils, crayons and/or markers. Then, you will create a fantastic world for your character’s story, based on memories or purely from your imagination. Enrollment limited to 10.

Material needs: Graphite pencil with eraser, pencil sharpener, crayons and/or oil pastels, water-based markers (can use fine and/or broad-tip markers). White sturdy drawing paper (5 sheets) and scrap paper. Scissors and masking tape. Optional: Colored pencils (Prang or Prismacolor brand are good options).
Special requirements: Cover table with newspaper or plastic tablecloth.

Aloha Ocean Painting / T, 7/27 - 9 AM
Let's suit up for an underwater art journey of the ocean! You'll create scenes of fish, coral, sea turtles and more, and then dive deep to explore the valleys and mountains of the ocean floor. You'll make art inspired by the Hawaiian-Emperor seamount chain, formed by volcanoes! Enrollment limited to 10.

Material needs: white paper-cardstock or watercolor paper, construction paper, markers, crayons or oil pastels, a graphite pencil and eraser, scissors, glue, watercolor set, water cup, brushes, plastic lid(s) to use to mix watercolor paint colors), painter’s rag.

Special requirements: Cover table with newspaper or plastic tablecloth. Wear an apron or paint shirt.

Fossil Art / Th, 7/29 - 9 AM
Normally fossils are 10,000 years old, but thanks to our amazing art skills we will create fossils out of real and imagined plants and animals. This class combines drawing, watercolor paints and mixed-media art techniques using shells, air-dry clay, paper and a variety of drawing materials. Enrollment limited to 10.
Material needs: white paper-cardstock or watercolor paper, construction paper, markers, crayons, a graphite pencil and eraser, scissors, glue, watercolor set, water cup, brushes, plastic lid(s) to use to mix watercolor paint colors), painter’s rag. Mixed-media: two or three ounces of white model magic clay or another brand of air-dry clay. Also bring to class small objects that have a fun texture - i.e. interesting shells, pebbles and small plastic toys make interesting impressions.

Special requirements: Cover table with newspaper or plastic tablecloth. Wear an apron or paint shirt.

Patterned Prints / T, 8/3 - 9 AM
Patterns are everywhere around us: in art, in nature, on our clothes, in our homes! Create your own patterns with printmaking on paper. See how artists from around the world play with patterns in their art medium of choice. You will search for patterns in their artwork, and then try your hand at printmaking. Experience the joy of making multiple prints in fresh new patterns, in vivid colors and assorted shapes! Enrollment limited to 10.

Art Inspiration: Yayoi Kusama, Claire Kelly, Fatu Akelei Feu’u, Faith Ringgold and Niki de Saint Phalle.
Material needs: Three to four colors of tempera paint, paper plates to hold paint colors, white paper or colored paper for printing. Collect objects to use for printing: sponges cut into shapes (triangles, rectangles, squares), round objects like spools, corks, lids, or a plastic cup.

Puppet Play / T, 8/10 - 9 AM
Transform paper into puppet characters that can entertain you and your family. Using your imagination, you will construct your puppet out of paper that you fold, bend, curl, cut and tear into shapes and forms. Develop your hand-eye coordination and learn how an idea in your head can become its own creation. Listen to a story about a young girl who creates a magnificent thing when she learns to keep trying and tinkering away on her creative idea. Art Inspiration: The Most Magnificent Thing, written and illustrated by Ashley Spires. Enrollment limited to 10. Material needs: Scissors, glue, construction paper, a pencil, crayons and markers. Mix It Up / T, 8/17 - 9 AM
Colors are so much fun to mix! Starting with primary paint colors, you will mix beautiful, bright colors on your painter’s palette. Use your imagination or share a favorite memory in a painting using all the colors you make. Discuss colorful works of art by famous artists, learn the song, "Three Primary Colors" by OK Go and listen to the book Mouse Paint by Ellen Stoll Walsh. Enrollment limited to 10.

Material needs: Red, yellow, blue, and white tempera paint colors. Brushes, water cup, paper plate for mixing, and lids or a plate for holding the paint colors. White paper for our painting surface. If tempera paint is not available, then watercolor paint can be substituted.

Special requirements: Wear an apron, a smock, or old clothes. Cover table with newspaper or plastic tablecloth.

The building is closed for Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve through New Year's Day*, Memorial Day and the last week in August through Labor Day.* There is no open studio when the building is closed. 

 

* Phone lines will be open Monday-Friday, excluding holidays, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. to take class registrations.
