A100PM20 Dreaming in Clay - Bowl/ M, 6/22- 1 PM (SOLD OUT)
Our clay creations are inspired by the whimsical sculptures of New York-based ceramic artist, Bruce Sherman. Sherman’s colorful sculptures are joined together in surprising ways and have symbols to discover such as hands, eyes and natural forces. The morning class will sculpt a fish that has personality, inspired by Sherman’s piece, Woman with Fish. The afternoon class will create a pinch pot bowl decorated with symbols that you hand paint with colored slips. Projects will be glazed and fired, and ready for pickup in three weeks. Enrollment limited to 12.

A101AM20 Budding Painters - Portrait / T, 6/23- 9 AM
Budding painters will love working with a watercolor, acrylic or tempera palette, turning primary colors into secondary and beyond! Let's experiment with colors and learn new techniques with paints and brushes while creating an expressive and vibrant painting. A101PM20 Drawing Basics - Still Lifes / T, 6/23-1 PM
Learning to draw helps children confidently express themselves on paper. This class will introduce tools and techniques and train the eye to see shapes and details. You will practice drawing different subjects and study prints by master artists that provide visual clues and inspiration. This class will focus on still lifes. Enrollment limited to 16.

A102AM20 Sunrise Painting / W, 6/24 - 9 AM
Starting with a wash of blue in our sky, young artists will mix warm reds, oranges and yellows, and blend these colors on watercolor paper to make a spectacular sunrise. You will make a few versions of sunrise paintings, such as a sunrise over Lake Minnetonka, catching the sun’s reflections on water, and a sunrise on land, complete with animal or tree silhouettes. Join an imaginary canoe expedition to the Boundary Waters to spot wildlife to draw and paint, such as a swimming moose or a loon paddling and fishing for minnows. Every season has art-worthy subjects to paint and draw, as we move from our summer animal paintings to relief prints resembling animal tracks in the snow. This class explores drawing, watercolor painting techniques and relief printmaking. Enrollment limited to 16.

A104AM20 The Secret Life of Pets / F, 6/26, 9 AM
Let’s dream up adventures for a ragtag gang of pets. Our story will be inspired by dog rivals turned friends, Max and Duke, and their escapades in Manhattan. You'll draw and paint pet buddies, and then create background scenes for your characters as they journey from the sewers to the Brooklyn Bridge to upscale high-rise apartments. You'll draw comic scenes with graphite pencils, markers and paints. Enrollment limited to 16.

If you loved the high energy, candy-colored world of Trolls, this mixed-media class is for you! You’ll draw and paint Princess Poppy and Branch with their famously tall hair that has a life of its own. Next you’ll create your own musical guest star to join the trolls on their World Tour, and paint and decorate your character’s musical instrument with paints, paper and sparkly rhinestones. Kenojuak Ashevak (1927-2013) was an Inuit artist whose prints, drawings and paintings are widely celebrated in Canada and around the world. Celebrate rain showers in this watercolor class, taking place rain or shine. Make a rainy day scene with characters in jackets and umbrellas using rich watercolor pigments. Next you’ll spritz water mist and add water droplets to make fun rain painting effects. Last but not least, you will paint a scene of a rainbow peeking out from the clouds, or even a rainbow-colored cloud! Enrollment limited to 16.

Let’s draw and paint jellyfish as they drift along with the ocean current. They make a fun painting subject due to their luminescent colors ranging from pink to yellow to purple. You’ll learn how to create a jellyfish’s soft body and tentacles and see how it moves through the ocean. Next, you’ll create sea creatures to accompany your jellyfish, including colorful fish and sea turtles. Based on Shaun the Sheep: Farmageddon, learn how to draw some of your favorite characters at Mossy Bottom Farm like Shaun the sheep and Bitzer the dog. See how just a few changes to a character’s ears, eyes and body can communicate what a character is thinking. Now it’s time to introduce your own alien and spaceship to the farm! Toys can be made out of clay, fabric, wood, and sometimes everyday items with a little ingenuity can be transformed into a favored toy just like Forky. Let’s imagine, sketch and build our own handheld toy puppet. It can be a cowboy, astronaut, or your own creation – with paints, markers, fabric, feathers, wood pieces and more. Claire Kelly is an American glass artist who has studied the art of Venetian glassblowing. She shapes glass into sculptures of animals and their worlds, full of color, pattern and organic shapes. The building is closed for Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve through New Year's Day*, Memorial Day and the last week in August through Labor Day.* There is no open studio when the building is closed. 

 

* Phone lines will be open Monday-Friday, excluding holidays, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. to take class registrations.
