Experiment with a variety of water-based painting techniques. Choose a color palette that will bring your art subject to life. There are so many ways to expressively apply paint to canvas, you will try out brush handling, painting with palette knives, and mark-making with sponges, paper, and more. Learn how color affects moods, size, perception. You will see examples of paintings from art history where artists used colors and brush work in expressive ways. Enrollment limited to 16. This is a relaxed drawing class that will build your confidence in drawing freely. There will be time to work with charcoal, graphite pencils, pens, and/or colored pencils. Each day you will have a drawing prompt to encourage artistic exploration, and a chance to sample a different drawing media. You will have time to develop your drawings which may combine different art media in the same piece. Enrollment limited to 16.

Learning to paint people takes time and practice. In this class each day will have prompts to get you making portraits of people around you or people you love. You will take a look at portraits by all kinds of artists. You may try a self portrait or animal portrait along the way. There are many ways to capture someone's special qualities, and painting is a fun way to do it. Composition, color, and lighting will be emphasized in this acrylic painting camp. If you admire hand lettered signs in storefronts, the playful graphics and text on band posters, or a well designed book cover then this is the camp for you. You will work on illustration projects of your own choosing. Explore a variety of drawing techniques, as you create studies in pen and ink, chalk art lettering, calligraphy and more. You will get hands on experience in watercolor and gouache in illustration. Enrollment limited to 16.

Explore Impressionist painting techniques. You will use acrylic paints to make landscape paintings as you learn about composition, perspective, color harmony, blending, mixing and other techniques. Loosening up your brushstrokes, and mixing color for mood, will help you capture landscape elements. There may be some outdoor plein air painting, weather permitting. Enrollment limited to 16.

Take a chip off the old block and rock like a sculptor, transforming a limestone block into three-dimensional art. This is the real thing - banging, chiseling, then filing and sanding to finish. Safety with traditional carving techniques will be taught. Historical sculptures and artists will be referenced. Enrollment limited to 12. Registration open to 10-15 year olds (Groups C & D)

Mexican pottery is beautiful and playful. You will learn the pinching, rolling, coiling, and handbuilding techniques used in making ceramic tableware. Projects may include vases, bowls, spoons and other dining essentials. You will have a hand at the surface designs that use patterns based on flowers, birds and other natural things to add intrigue to your vessels. Projects will be glazed, fired, and ready for pickup in three weeks. Enrollment limited to 16. Groups C & D.

Bring in your thrift store finds, T-shirts, or favorite pair of jeans to remake in this fiber arts camp. You will begin by transforming T-shirts, learning how to cut and alter the fabric to best match your designs. Gain experience with patterns and basic sewing construction terms and techniques as you recreate your clothing. Then personalize it with embroidery stitches, fabric painting, or printmaking techniques. Bring a couple clothing options (T-shirts, thrifted jeans) to the first day of camp. Our palettes will be awash in color from vibrant hues to pastels. Learn how colors can harmonize together, and play up each color’s aspects to impact the whole mood of a piece. Let’s explore color theory with analogous, complementary, and split-complementary color schemes. Gain inspiration from painters who applied color masterfully such as Vincent Van Gogh, Helen Frankenthaler, and David Hockney. Experiment with color and make your own splash in the art world. D405PM25 Faux Bois Ceramics / July 21 - 25 -1PM

Explore the art of faux bois and other trompe l'oeil ceramic art. Faux Bois means 'False Wood' in French, and these pieces may fool you. You will make a vase or pot that looks like a tree stump or branch. Then explore more 'tricks of the eye' making ceramic bowls that look like melon halves. Starting with various handbuilding techniques you may use molds, pinch, coil, and other construction methods. Then add touches like feet, handles, or ears. To finish create surfaces that look like bark, fruit, alligators or bubbles. After you paint with underglazes the mystery will deepen on your fantastic creations. Because of the bisque and glaze firing process, estimated pick up is three weeks after the class. Enrollment limited to 12.

Still lifes that are not still, action painting that springs from drawings, this camp will explore stillness and motion through the use of multimedia techniques. Enrollment limited to 16.

Your own laptop, chromebook or IPAD is required for this camp. Campers will lean how to download art programs, navigate adjustments and options to create unique illustrations of your very own. Just like in an analog sketchbook you will make thumbnail sketches, explore concepts, and begin to build, layer and expand your moodboards into final illustrations. Enrollment limited to 12.

Experience the magic of watercolor painting as we delve into watercolor fundamentals. Explore both wet-into-wet and wet-into-dry painting techniques. Try out some fun techniques to create texture in your paintings. Still life, landscape and other subjects matter will be highlighted. If you have ever thought about creating your own custom sketchbooks or journals, this camp is for you. Explore the world of bookbinding and junk journaling with a variety of mediums and techniques, including paper-making, collage, ink, and more. Campers will learn how to create their own sketchbooks from cover to spine, ways to repurpose and customized existing books, and experiment with how to fill them. Enrollment limited to 16.

This camp will have you at an easel observing people as subjects. You will learn to do quick sketches, gestural drawing, as well as more in depth studies. You will start out drawing, then use your sketches to create paintings of people that will teach you patience, observation, and the fun of making your paintings special with added details to personalize your work. This is a relaxed class that will change how you see others. Enrollment limited to 12.

Let's find out how to turn a story into a Graphic Novel. Begin with something that happened to you. Some examples will be shown in class to prompt you. You will draw your way with pens and watercolors as you tell your tale with mostly pictures. Adding words is an option but the focus will be on making your drawings show moods, actions, reactions, adventure, drama, and locations. Pages will be formatted into book style 'cells' as your story progresses. Last thing will be making a book cover to house this tale of your own making. This is a relaxed class with fantastic outcomes using pens, inks, watercolors and colored pencils. Enrollment limited to 12.

There is something special about small things. This camp approaches miniature painting with zest! You will make smaller and smaller artworks each day of camp. Using smaller tools and smaller canvases each day campers will create intimate paintings that show the reason why these paintings are often called the gems of the art world. Enrollment limited to 16. Groups C & D.

  • Liability Waiver Requirement
    Before you are able to attend a class or workshop at the Art Center, we must have a signed RELEASE OF LIABILITY AND ASSUMPTION OF RISK. If you register on line you must review and indicate you accept the terms of this release before you will be directed to the classes. If you register by phone, the Registrar will email you a link to the waiver you must complete before your registration can be processed. If you register in person, you will be asked to complete the waiver on our tablet or on your phone.

The building is closed for Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve through New Year's Day*, Memorial Day and the last week in August through Labor Day.* There is no open studio when the building is closed.
