Experiment with a variety of water-based painting techniques! Choose a color palette that will bring your art subject to life. There are so many ways to expressively apply paint to canvas, and we’ll cover brush handling, painting with palette knives, and mark-making with sponges, stamps, paper, and more. Learn how to use gel medium and modeling paste to create textural effects. You’ll see examples of paintings from art history where artists made colors sing. This is a relaxed drawing class that will build your confidence in drawing freely. There will be time to work with charcoal, graphite pencils, pens, and/or colored pencils. Each day you’ll have a drawing prompt to encourage artistic exploration, and a chance to sample a different drawing media. You’ll have time to develop your drawings which may combine different art media in the same piece. Enrollment limited to 15.

If you admire hand-lettered signs in storefronts, the playful graphics and text on band posters and a well-designed book cover, then this camp is for you. You'll work on illustration projects of your choosing. Explore a variety of drawing techniques as you create studies in pen and ink, graphite, markers, and more. You'll also get hands-on experience working with watercolor and gouache in illustration. There will be artist demos, drawing prompts, and studio time for developing your illustrations. Enrollment limited to 15.

There are so many techniques when it comes to jewelry! Wire can be bent, twisted, or wrapped to create interesting jewelry designs. Beads can be strung on nylon beading thread, embroidery floss, and wire to add color and pattern possibilities. Your teaching artist will demonstrate wire and beading techniques and share project ideas, while encouraging campers to investigate their own interests. Enrollment limited to 15.

Let's hone our observational drawing skills as we gather and/or sketch in-situ objects from nature. You will study up close the wildflowers, plants, and trees surrounding the art center and the nearby Dakota Rail Regional Trail. You will learn new drawing techniques with pencil, colored pencil, and ink. Develop a basic understanding of color theory, still life composition, and plant identification. Realistic and abstract ideas will be explored. Enrollment limited to 15.

Take a chip off the old block and rock like a sculptor, transforming a limestone block into three-dimensional art. This is the real thing - banging, chiseling, then filing and sanding to finish. Bring in your thrift store finds, T-shirts, or favorite pair of jeans to transform and/or remake in this fiber arts camp. You’ll begin by transforming T-shirts, learning how to cut and alter the fabric to best match your designs. Gain experience with patterns and basic sewing construction terms and techniques as you recreate your clothing. Then personalize it with embroidery stitches, fabric painting, and/or printmaking techniques. Bring a couple clothing options (T-shirts, thrifted jeans) to the first day of camp. Your mixed-media art will include washes of paint, collaged imagery, hand-drawn elements, stamped and printed motifs, and more. This class uses water-based paints applied to paper and/or canvas boards. Learn about color mixing, brush handling, printing with paints or inks, and how to add paper and fibers to paintings. Our palettes with be awash in color from vibrant hues to pastels. Learn how colors can harmonize together, and play up each color’s aspects to impact the whole mood of a piece. Let’s explore color theory with analogous, complementary, and split-complementary color schemes. Gain inspiration from painters who applied color masterfully such as Vincent Van Gogh, Helen Frankenthaler, and David Hockney. Experiment with color and make your own splash in the art world. Come experience the joy of eating and drinking out of something handmade. You will make your own plates, mugs, bowls, trays and more. Learn various handbuilding techniques using molds, pinch, coil, and hard and soft slab construction. Consider fun touches to add to your pottery like feet, handles, and/or small figurines. Experiment with carving and applying texture with stamps, roller tools, and found objects. All work will be painted with underglazes and colored slips and glazed. Projects will be fired, ready for pickup in three weeks. Enrollment limited to 12. Registration open to 10-15 year olds (Groups C & D)

Experiment with printmaker’s tools and water-based screen printing inks to create multicolored prints based on original designs. You’ll learn how to design and cut paper stencils that add depth and variation to your prints. Hone your skills applying ink to screens for best results. This camp opens up new printmaking possibilities easy to duplicate at home. Sample projects are paper prints to decorate the wall, and a printed tote bag and/or apron. Enrollment limited to 10.

Join us as we experiment with color, texture and pattern in small-scale weavings. Using a simple frame loom, learn how to warp a loom and prepare weft yarn for weaving. The majority of class time will be devoted to weaving with yarn --from cotton to wool to acrylic-blends --representing a rainbow of colors. Expand your weaving know-how with techniques to add texture and pattern. You’ll even learn finishing techniques for creating a woven wall hanging. Enrollment limited to 12. Their painting techniques, style, and subject matter will serve as inspiration to advance your skills. Enrollment limited to 15.

There is something special about an object that is made by hand. In this class you will have an opportunity to design and create objects that are fun to use and that show off the personality of the maker, too. Projects may include a hand-painted sign with your favorite quote, a painted pinch pot bowl, and/or a poster designed with relief block prints. Enrollment limited to 15.

The building is closed for Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve through New Year's Day*, Memorial Day and the last week in August through Labor Day.* There is no open studio when the building is closed. 

 

* Phone lines will be open Monday-Friday, excluding holidays, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. to take class registrations.
