Art journals are an excellent way to capture impressions of a place when you are traveling or even on a backyard nature walk. Create your own art journal pages based on a meaningful moment, a special place, or a natural or architectural wonder. Start by sketching in graphite and ink, and then learn some tips for applying watercolor paints to make your sketches come alive. This is a relaxed drawing class that will build your confidence in drawing freely using traditional and nontraditional media. There will be time to work with charcoal, graphite, colored pencil and alcohol markers - and then some unexpected nontraditional media and drawing tools like coffee and toothpicks. Each day you’ll work with a new drawing media and have a drawing prompt to encourage artistic exploration. Enrollment limited to 12.

Both pastels and colored pencils come in a rainbow of colors and are fun to blend and use in mixed-media artwork. Learn how to make different line strokes, cross-hatch marks, soft color gradations and more with each media separately. Then see how you can combine pastels and wax-based colored pencils with watercolor, gouache or acrylic paints. Enrollment limited to 12.

Acrylic paints are fun, forgiving, and the focus of this art camp. This is an all-skill level class encouraging experimentation with a variety of techniques popular for acrylic work. You'll learn more about composition, the selection of your color palettes, and brush handling tips for best results. Building up paint layers to create depth will be covered, along with color, value and perspective. Enrollment limited to 12.

Take a chip off the old block and rock like a sculptor, transforming a limestone block into three-dimensional art. This is the real thing - banging, chiseling, then filing and sanding to finish. Let's hone our observational drawing skills as we gather and/or sketch in-situ objects from nature. You will study up close the wildflowers, plants and trees surrounding the art center and the nearby Dakota Rail Regional Trail. You will learn new drawing techniques with pencil, colored pencil and ink. Develop a basic understanding of color theory, still life composition and plant identification. Realistic and abstract ideas will be explored. Enrollment limited to 12.

Join us as we experiment with color, texture and pattern in small-scale weavings. Using a simple frame loom, learn how to warp a loom and prepare weft yarn for weaving. The majority of class time will be devoted to weaving with yarn --from cotton to wool to acrylic-blends --representing a rainbow of colors. Expand your weaving know-how with techniques to add texture and pattern. You’ll even learn finishing techniques for creating a woven wall hanging. Enrollment limited to 12. Come experience the joy of eating and drinking out of something handmade. You will make your own plates, mugs, bowls, bases and more. Learn the properties of the potter’s wheel and various handbuilding techniques using molds, pinch, coil, and hard and soft slab construction. All work will be painted with underglazes and colored slips and glazed. Projects will be fired, ready for pickup in three weeks. Enrollment limited to 12. There is something special about an object that is made by hand. In this class you will have an opportunity to design and create objects that are fun to use and that show off the personality of the maker, too. Projects may include a hand-painted sign with your favorite quote, a pinch pot candleholder based on a hand-drawn sketch, a fabric designed with relief block prints, or a wall hanging made by weaving yarn, raffia and fabric scraps. Enrollment limited to 12.

The building is closed for Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve through New Year's Day*, Memorial Day and the last week in August through Labor Day.* There is no open studio when the building is closed.
