Your hand-drawn artwork is pretty special. Imagine multiple prints of it! You’ll experiment with printmaker’s tools to create multicolored and layered prints based on your original sketches. You’ll learn how to carve, ink and print in a variety of ways. You’ll even learn basic screen printing techniques to make one-of-a-kind prints on paper or fabric! Enrollment limited to 14.

Take a chip off the old block and rock like a sculptor, transforming a limestone block into 3-D art. This is the real thing - banging, chiseling, then filing and sanding to finish. Many artists today seamlessly move between traditional art, where they can get their hands dirty, and the “clean” art experience of working digitally. You will move from hands-on techniques like pen and ink and watercolor washes to the digital realm and back again. You’ll be impressed by how many art techniques can be created on your iPad. Let’s make 2-D drawings come to life through texture. Learn how to easily create texture in drawings by varying pencil strokes, using hatch marks and building up tone. Let’s explore the glass arts! First learn about what it’s like to work in a hot shop where glassblowing happens in a team environment. Then try your hand at the warm glass art of fused glass, where glass is fired in a kiln. You will create a glass memento of your own, practicing basic glass cutting and design skills. Fused glass artwork will be fired in a kiln by the instructor. The art center will notify you when glass is ready for pickup. Enrollment limited to 10. Learn basic glass art techniques and practice cutting glass and composing colorful designs. Play with geometric and organic shapes and sparkly to subtle color combinations in your designs. Create small-scale projects like sun catchers and plates for yourself or as a perfect gift! This camp combines both glass fusing with other glass art like mosaic. You'll have a few whimsical glass creations by the end of camp. Fused glass artwork will be fired in a kiln by the instructor. The art center will notify you when glass is ready for pickup. Free up your creativity and let your ideas flow with the simplest of tools - a pencil and paper. You’ll create loose and rapid sketches to capture your thoughts and art interests. There will be a mix of drawing prompts, still life setups and free sketching of subjects that you love. You will have a chance to mix up some of your regular drawing tools - and maybe add a splash of color with paints or inks to your sketches. Enrollment limited to 16.

Colored pencils are versatile! There is a rainbow of color options out there. Wax colored pencils are a joy to blend to create rich color combinations. Beginning with fashion sketching, you will learn how to create attention-getting looks inspired by modern and historical styles. Learn some tips for creating ruffles, tucks and draping fabric with a pencil, watercolor and ink. Come experience the joy of eating and drinking out of something handmade. You will make your own plates, mugs, bowls, bases and more. Learn the properties of the potter’s wheel and various handbuilding techniques using molds, pinch, coil, and hard and soft slab construction. Gyotaku is a traditional Japanese method of printing fish that was used by fishermen to record their catches while out at sea. These fish prints have developed into an art form. Using the art center’s rubber molds created from real fish and sea life, you will apply ink with a brayer to create colorful and interesting relief Gyotaku prints. Enrollment limited to 12. Using a simple loom and a treasure trove of colorful yarns and fabric strips at the art center, you’ll create a woven art piece. Learn the basic vocabulary of weaving such as warp and weft yarn, plain weave, playing with texture and pattern by adding rya knots or upcycled fabric, and finishing a piece so it’s ready to hang on a wall. In this 10-day clay camp, campers will create a variety of functional and decorative ceramic ware using both handbuilding and wheel-throwing techniques. Gain experience on the potter's wheel as you learn how to throw and trim mugs and bowls. You will glaze some work for food-safe use and apply paints to your decorative pieces. Sculpture and glass artists often work in teams to create large works of art. Learn about large-scale sculpture artists Claus Oldenburg, Coosie Van Brugen, Liz Miller, Dale Chihuly, Nancy Graves and Alexander Calder, and then get ready to sculpt BIG. You will create two large-scale team projects –one with papier-mâché and one focused on light and shadow, and smaller sculptures to take home. Enrollment limited to 16.

Let's construct wonders of your imagination with the simple ingredients of flour, water and paper. First you will build the body of your sculpture from paper, balloons and/or a wire armature. Next you will apply your papier-mâché layers, and then wait for the magic hour when everything is dry. Lastly your sculptures come to life with help from paints, mixed media, fiber and found objects. If you like Zentangle designs with their repeating lines and shapes, this class is for you. First practice drawing with a crow quill dip pen and ink, where it’s a fun challenge to vary your line widths in a doodle - and maybe even have a wayward ink splatter to show for your efforts! Explore both the positive and the negative space in sculpture, and make your own art sculpture out of air-dry clay to emphasize the hollows and open spaces. You will begin with a block of clay that you carve into to create interesting holes. Learn and explore various texture methods to draw people’s eyes to those empty spaces in our sculptures. Instead of just using our brushes, you will dab, sponge and add simple ingredients while the paint is wet to make the surface texture exciting. C309AM20 My Bedroom Rocks /Aug 17-21- 9 AM
Join us as we make unique décor to brighten up a room. You’ll create color-popping posters, hand-drawn with pens and markers, filled with words and images that are meaningful to you. Design your own mosaic pieced together with ceramic tiles, glass gems, beads and buttons, and learn how to paint on fabric. You will explore a wide range of art materials as you create in both 2-D and 3-D. Enrollment limited to 16.

Drawing and painting are central to most art forms. Starting with basic drawing techniques, you will build skills and confidence, creating successful watercolor, tempera and acrylic paintings. Fundamental color mixing and painting techniques will be explored with both realistic and abstract subjects. Enrollment limited to 16.

The building is closed for Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve through New Year's Day*, Memorial Day and the last week in August through Labor Day.* There is no open studio when the building is closed. 

 

* Phone lines will be open Monday-Friday, excluding holidays, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. to take class registrations.
