Special Effects in Watercolor / June 21, 23 & 25
Did you ever wonder how painters capture special visual effects? Let’s create atmospheric effects like underwater bubbles, splashing water, or fireworks exploding in the sky. You will learn how to brush, splatter and pour watercolor paint to add interest to your work. You'll see how you can create special effects for scenic landscapes to portrait backgrounds. Best yet watercolor paints are a breeze to clean up. Enrollment limited to 12.

Material needs: white paper-cardstock or watercolor paper, Sharpie permanent black marker, a graphite pencil and eraser, watercolor set, water cup, brushes, plastic lid(s) to use to mix watercolor paint colors), painter’s rag. For texture in paintings, find a paper-sized piece of bubble wrap, saran wrap, corrugated cardboard, a few plastic straws, string, pinch of table salt in a small bowl, a toothbrush that will only have art use after this class. Any additional special effect materials will be described at your first class. These will be commonplace objects easy to collect.

Special requirements: Cover table with newspaper or plastic tablecloth. Wear an apron or paint shirt.

Sculpture Moves / June 21, 23 & 25 - 2 PM
Kinetic sculptures will blow your mind! You will explore ways to add motion and sound to your sculptures, designed and created with found and recycled objects and basic art materials. Be inspired by artists who use movement to create sculptures that crawl across beaches, spin making patterns as they move, slowly turn in the breeze, or create sounds with movement! Enrollment limited to 10. Registration open to 7-12 year olds (Groups B & C).

Art Inspiration: Theo Jansen, David C. Roy, Alexander Calder, Zimoun and Niki de Saint Phalle.

Material needs: Scissors, glue, string or yarn, masking tape or other strong tape, toilet paper or paper towel tubes, boxes, paper, dowels and any found objects you think look interesting.

Weave It! / June 22 & 24 - 2 PM
Using a simple loom and colorful yarn and fabric strips, you’ll create a woven art piece. Learn the basic vocabulary of weaving such as warp and weft yarn, plain weave, playing with texture and pattern and finishing a piece so it’s ready to hang on a wall. Enrollment limited to 12. Registration open to 7-12 year olds (Groups B & C).

Material needs: frame loom that measures 8" x 8" or similar (cardboard loom okay - the art center can send directions to make this in advance of class), an assortment of colors and textures of yarn, string, fabric strips and ribbons (bulky yarn and fabric strips are recommended for completing project more quickly), scissors, blunt tapestry needle (3-5" length best), fork or comb.

Special requirements: table and chair, open work space for weaving.

Pop Into Painting / 7/7-7/8 - 2 PM
Let’s make art that is bold, bright, and exciting, just like the Pop Art movement. You will look at how pop artists from different time periods and cultures interpreted popular culture through art. Everything from page-turning comic book stories to mass-marketed toys like Hello Kitty can inspire your pop art creations. Bring your favorite pop references and see where the inspiration leads you. Enrollment limited to 12.

Material needs: pencil-eraser, pastel paper, watercolor paper, cardstock-white, tempera paints -primary colors, fluorescent tempera, paint brushes (assorted), paint tray, water cup, paper towels, Sharpies, oil pastel set with black and white.

Drawing Sampler / W, 7/7 - 9 AM
Let’s make 2-D drawings come to life through texture. Learn how to easily create texture in drawings by varying pencil strokes, using hatch marks and building up tone. After sampling a few drawing tools and marks, we will develop one drawing together playing with texture and color combined. Enrollment limited to 10. Registration open to 7 - 12 year olds (Groups B & C).

Material needs: Graphite pencil(s) with eraser, pencil sharpener, crayons and/or oil pastels, water-based markers (can use fine and/or broad-tip markers). If you have different graphite pencil grades (i.e. 2H, HB, 2B) this is a great class to experiment with them. White sturdy drawing paper (5 sheets) and scrap paper. Optional: Colored pencils (Prang or Prismacolor brands are good options available at art & craft stores).

Let's explore the power of shapes and lines to communicate in art what we see in the world around us. You will piece together your freehand line drawings and shapes into exciting compositions. Experiment with a variety of lines and shapes made with brushes, sponges, stamps, scissors and more. Enrollment limited to 12. Registration open to 7-12 year olds (Groups B & C).

Acrylic paints are vibrant, fun and forgiving. Practice mixing colors, stamping, blending and creating washes. Learn how to break down an image into simple shades, dark and light, warm and cool colors, and confidently create your own painting masterpiece. Enrollment limited to 12.

If you like Zentangle designs with their repeating lines and shapes, this class is for you. Let's break out the ballpoint pens, Sharpie markers and/or gel pens to create interesting lines, patterns and designs. Enrollment limited to 12. Registration open to 10-15 year olds (Groups C & D).

Painting Landscapes / 7/19-7/21 - 2 PM
This camp sees landscapes from a fresh perspective. You may paint from the perspective of a bug in the grass, or from a birds-eye view where houses, farms and cities resemble a patchwork quilt. Come experiment with a variety of painting surfaces and styles with watercolor paints and mixed media. Sample projects are a textured relief mountain pass, desert plateaus at sunset, or island views from the sky. Enrollment limited to 12. Registration open to 7-12 year olds (Groups B & C).

Material needs: pencil-eraser, watercolor paper, cardstock-white, pastel paper, watercolor set, cup of water, Sharpies or pens at least 3 different sizes, colored pencils, oil pastels set including white and black, device to look up photographs or printed pictures for inspiration.

Anything is possible with a pencil! Build skill and confidence in seeing details, practicing essential drawing techniques and learning visual art foundations. You will turn sketches into masterpieces using graphite, colored pencils, charcoal, pastels and/or markers. Enrollment limited to 12. Registration is open to 7-12 year olds (Groups B & C).

Mixed-Media Acrylic Painting / July 26, 28 & 30
Acrylic paints are vibrant, fun and forgiving. Practice mixing colors, stamping, blending and creating washes. Learn how to break down an image into simple shapes, and dark, light, warm and cool colors. There will be opportunities to add mixed media throughout your painting process. Mixed-media materials may include papers, found objects, fabric scraps and yarn. Enrollment limited to 12. Registration open to 7-12 year olds (Groups B & C).

Material needs: white drawing paper, a graphite pencil and eraser, white cardstock or sturdy paper for painting surface, Acrylic paint tubes in blue, red, yellow and white. Container for water, paint brushes, paper plate or large plastic container lid for mixing paint, painter’s rag. Mixed-media materials can be decorative papers, yarn, fabric swatches, etc. Artist will discuss mixed-media options on first class day. Optional: Primed canvas board, or find a sturdy cardboard surface (i.e. backing cardboard found on a notepad).

Art Detectives / July 26, 28 & 30 - 2 PM
Develop your artistic eye by looking carefully at the world around you to uncover the finer details. You will be sleuthing to find objects around your home or backyard that offer up fun and exciting opportunities to examine objects closely. Bring your real objects to class to draw from life. You will investigate the art elements of line, shape, color, and light and shadow in your inspired drawings. Enrollment limited to 10. Registration open to 7 - 12 year olds (Groups B & C).

Material needs: Please have a variety of drawing materials on hand. Choose any of the following: crayons, pencils, colored pencils, erasers, markers, oil pastels, chalk, or your preferred drawing tool. I suggest having at least three options. Bring paper for your drawings. Come to the first day with 3 items you discover in your bedroom that would be fun to draw. Ideas might be a favorite stuffed animal, a musical instrument, an interesting shoe, a toy, a special gift, or anything you can find that catches your interest and has lots of fun details to draw.

Jell-O Gel Printing / Aug 2, 4 & 6 - 2 PM
Gelatin printing is fun and so easy to do at home. We will use Jell-O as our printing plate, and explore all the ways to play with color, surface masks and mark-making on the plate. You will be impressed with the beautiful images created layer upon layer on your construction paper. The first two days are printmaking days. On the final day, you will create collages, cards and more, all from your beautifully layered Jell-O prints. Enrollment limited to 10.

Material needs: 1 Day before class: Mix together 3 packs of Jell-O with 1 cup of hot water, pour into a 9x12 pan and refrigerate overnight. Mini-foam roller, tempera paint or printing ink, stencils or tag board to make stencils, a couple stamps used with stamp pads (nothing expensive), sponges cut into shapes, plastic or paper cups, and string, lace or other things found around the house that could be used to roll paint over to create interesting patterns or images. White paper or colored construction paper. Scissors, glue, and a pencil.

Special requirements: Wear an apron, a smock, or old clothes. Cover table with newspaper or plastic tablecloth.

Origami Art / Aug 2-5 - 10 AM
Learn about the Japanese art form of origami where a few folds can transform a flat sheet of paper into a leaping frog, a bird or a gift box. You will learn step-by-step folding techniques to make creative origami art that will surprise and delight your friends! This is an introductory class, but campers with experience are welcome and will learn models that are not found on YouTube. Enrollment limited to 12. Registration open to 10-15 year olds (Groups C & D).

Material needs: Pack of 6 x 6" (or close) papers. Variety of colors. Minimum of 50 sheets. Look for a pack that has color on one side of the paper and white on the other. A good option is the Yasutomo 6" traditional origami paper pack.

Make a Statement / Aug 9, 11 & 13 - 2 PM
Artists create art about themselves, share messages about the world and create hope. Each day you will explore a different theme or method of creating. We will look at and discuss the messages of artists representing an array of art mediums. See how these artists explore themes of ecology, identity and more through street art, photography, sculpture, performance art and more. This is a mixed-media art camp where you will choose which drawing or painting materials you would like to use each day. Find and share your voice and ideas with the world! Enrollment limited to 10.

Art Inspiration: Tawny Chatmon, Ifrah Mansour, Angela Haseltine Pozzi, Ai Weiwei, Shamsia Hassani, Farid Rueda and Swoon. Material needs: Mixed-Media materials include your choice of oil pastels, colored pencils, crayons, chalk, tempera or acrylic paints, watercolor paints, collage papers (patterned or construction paper), glue, scissors, white paper for drawing, painting, etc. Please have several different things on hand to use each day.

Watercolor Remix / 8/9-8/11 - 9 AM
Advance your skills with watercolor painting and discover fresh new techniques in this versatile medium. You'll cover wet-on-wet and wet-on-dry painting, then explore mixing in other media with your transparent watercolors like collage and ink. Enrollment limited to 12. Registration open to 10-15 year olds (Groups C & D).

Material needs: watercolor paper (different sizes), watercolor set, cup of water, watercolor brushes (different sizes), salt, rubbing alcohol, colored construction paper, pencil, scissors, tape, eraser. A dip pen, nib, and black ink (calligraphy or India ink). A good option is the Speedball crow quill dip pen set (#102 nib, style A holder, .4 oz. black calligraphy ink). Optional: Dr. Ph. Martin's bleed-proof white.

Let’s expand our painting horizons inspired by American artist Wayne Thiebaud, who created colorful paintings of every day objects like pastries and paint cans. You will paint with a primary color palette, and create eye-catching paintings of desserts and more that are a feast for your eyes. Enrollment limited to 12.

Happy Watercolors / Th, 8/12 - 1 PM
Let’s make our watercolor paintings even livelier by focusing on texture! Instead of just using our brushes, you will dab, sponge and add simple ingredients while the paint is wet to make the surface texture exciting. Brushstroke Bash / 8/16-6/20 - 2 PM
Spend five days actively painting with tempera and/or watercolor paints, creating art from your imagination and direct observation. You will learn the fundamentals of color mixing and brush handling and learn how famous and contemporary artists use brushstroke and color to express feelings, share stories and relay memories. This class provides a lot of studio art time to create your own work about ideas that inspire you. Enrollment limited to 10. Registration open to 7 - 12 year olds (Groups B & C).

Material needs: Red, yellow, blue, white tempera paint colors. Brushes, water cup, paper plate for mixing, and lids or a plate for holding the paint colors. White paper for the painting surface. If tempera paint is not available, watercolor paint can be substituted.

The building is closed for Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve through New Year's Day*, Memorial Day and the last week in August through Labor Day.* There is no open studio when the building is closed.
