Words and pictures merge in this fun camp. You will work with pencil, ink pens, colored pencils, and more as you create words that look like what you want to say. Fonts can be made out of skateboards, giraffes, flowers or just about anything. Exploring letters as visual elements will take you on a roller coaster ride of multimedia fun. You will learn about habitats and make sketches of different terrains. Then, starting with mason jars as our base, this camp will create tiny habitats. You may make a small greenhouse and an ocean or lake reef. You will use an amalgam of natural and artificial objects to make these fascinating tiny worlds. Mixed media of paint, shells, branches, rocks, and glue will be used along with other materials. Enrollment limited to 16.

Take some clay and make your own woodland menagerie. When you look into the woods you might not see all the creatures who live there at first glance. but when you look closer you will see frogs, salamanders, butterflies, mushrooms, owls, fox and many other friends. This camp will help you create small versions of your favorite woodland creatures. You may even make a fairy or gnome or teeny house for a toad. Because of the bisque and glazed firing process estimated pick up is three weeks after the class. Enrollment limited to 16.

Explore and experiment with art materials, found objects and natural materials while you create your own widget sculptures just the right size for you.

In this fun filled camp you will learn about Claes Oldenberg, the Swedish born artist who made the Minneapolis Spoon & Cherry sculpture. Claes made lots of sculptures of foods that people love to eat, like giant french fries. You will make your favorite foods on a smaller scale, and out of clay. Using handbuilding techniques like coiling, you will be able to make burgers, fries, ice cream, or cupcakes, even sushi that will be fun artworks to look at. To help create the illusion of deliciousness you will add color. Because of the bisque and glazed firing process estimated pick up is three weeks after the class.

This camp will introduce you to the geometric and organic possibilities of fun. You will use tiles, glass beads, rocks and more in mosaic projects like a decorative tile or flower pot. You will play with paper mosaics to create maps, mosaics and other multimedia projects.

Adventure begins at Summer Arts Camp! Create a miniature treehouse, icehouse, igloo, adobe house, skatepark or swimming pool. This camp will show you how to create model habitats for any climate. You will use found objects, cardboard, duct tape, and your imagination as you create your favorite place to be!

Depict a character's appearance and personality with pencil and paper in a comic style. First we will focus on the lines and shapes of the head and body of human characters. Then we will move onto animal characters, real or imagined, from the past, present or future. Your comics will be made with graphite, colored pencils, markers and water based paints. Learn the basics of weaving while having fun with fiber and mixed media. Practice plain weave and its basic "over and under" technique to weave with yarn, fabric scraps, ribbons, and paper. Learn how to warp and weave on a simple loom. Play with color and texture to weave one-of-a-kind mixed media art pieces. Sample projects are a woven basket for a mini felted creature and a "woven" painting made with watercolor artwork we paint, cut, and weave into something wonderful. Enrollment limited to 12.

Mix your painter's palette to create a rainbow of warm and cool colors of all hues. Learn basic brush handling skills and color mixing, and put these skills to use creating expressive paintings inspired by the masters. Every day, you will gain new insights into painting in watercolor, acrylic and/or tempera. You will gain a sense of the special painting techniques and different qualities of each paint. Your palette will be awash in color, from warm and cool to earth tones and metallics. In this camp, you will paint a still life in complementary colors and experiment with painting techniques like Impressionism and Pointillism. Landscapes and other subjects will be explored, as you use colorful effects to create Northern Lights or night skies. Enrollment is limited to 16.

In this camp you will make a treasure box by painting a wooden box, and decorating it. You may paint on fabric, even a pair of shoes. You will explore painting and turning trash into treasure. You will experiment on different surfaces and adding embellishments. This is a fun way to end your summer arts explorations! Enrollment limited to 16.

  • Liability Waiver Requirement
    Before you are able to attend a class or workshop at the Art Center, we must have a signed RELEASE OF LIABILITY AND ASSUMPTION OF RISK. If you register on line you must review and indicate you accept the terms of this release before you will be directed to the classes. If you register by phone, the Registrar will email you a link to the waiver you must complete before your registration can be processed. If you register in person, you will be asked to complete the waiver on our tablet or on your phone.

The building is closed for Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve through New Year's Day*, Memorial Day and the last week in August through Labor Day.* There is no open studio when the building is closed. 

 

* Phone lines will be open Monday-Friday, excluding holidays, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. to take class registrations.
