Learn how to use gel medium and modeling paste to create textural effects. You will see examples of paintings from art history where artists made colors sing. This camp will take you through drawings and sketches to finished drawings and designs. The focus is on portraiture. Working from photos and artworks, and from life, you will create artworks of people. You can choose people you know or admire, famous people or famous artists. Drawing faces is challenging but with practice your drawing skills will improve as you learn to use shapes, to shade, and to organize your ideas. Charcoal, graphite pencils, conte, colored pencils, pastels and inks may be used as you learn to draw people in your own style. Enrollment limited to 16.

Coinciding with the Walker Art Center's Keith Haring Exhibit, this class will focus on Street Art. You will learn about artists who take their artwork from the streets to the art gallery. Both large and small paintings and drawings will be made using paper, cardboard, cloth, signs, and found objects. You may even design your own stamp or currency. Each day will introduce you to artists who engage with their communities through their art. Focus is on drawing and painting. Enrollment limited to 16.

Pottery played an important role in ancient times, just as it does today. You will learn the pinching, rolling, coiling, and handbuilding techniques used in Mayan ceramics. Projects may include vases, whistles, animals, and other objects of art. You will have a hand at the surface designs that tell stories, and add intrigue to the vessels from the past. You will begin by transforming T-shirts, learning how to cut and alter the fabric to best match your designs. Gain experience with patterns and basic sewing construction terms and techniques as you recreate your clothing. Then personalize it with embroidery stitches, fabric painting, or printmaking techniques. Bring a couple clothing options (T-shirts, thrifted jeans) to the first day of camp. Come experience the joy of eating and drinking out of something handmade. You will make your own plates, mugs, bowls, trays and more. Learn various handbuilding techniques using molds, pinch, coil, and hard and soft slab construction. Consider fun touches to add to your pottery like feet, handles, and/or small figurines. Experiment with carving and applying texture with stamps, roller tools, and found objects. All work will be painted with underglazes and colored slips and glazed. Let's find out how to turn a story into a Graphic Novel. Begin with something that happened to you. Some examples will be shown in class to prompt you. You will draw your way with pens and watercolors as you tell your tale with mostly pictures. Adding words is an option but the focus will be on making your drawings show moods, actions, reactions, adventure, drama, and locations. Pages will be formatted into book style 'cells' as your story progresses. Last thing will be making a book cover to house this tale of your own making. This is a relaxed class with fantastic outcomes using pens, inks, watercolors and colored pencils. Enrollment limited to 12.

Before you are able to attend a class or workshop at the Art Center, we must have a signed RELEASE OF LIABILITY AND ASSUMPTION OF RISK. If you register on line you must review and indicate you accept the terms of this release before you will be directed to the classes. If you register by phone, the Registrar will email you a link to the waiver you must complete before your registration can be processed. If you register in person, you will be asked to complete the waiver on our tablet or on your phone.
